In Nier Automata you're engaged in battle against aliens and machines on Earth to protect the human race inhabiting the moon. But you learn the aliens are dead and have been for years. The machines are eventually infected with a virus that drives them insane. In the end you learn that not only are the aliens dead, but the humans are all gone as well. Everything that you have fought for was a lie the entire time.

You're fighting Ansem, who isn't really Ansem, but is actually the Heartless of Xehanort, who is actually Terra who got his heart possessed by Xehanort. You then fight Xemnas who is Xehanorts Nobody, but technically he's Terra's Nobody, but is still part not Ansem, or rather Xehanort. Then you finally fight Xehanort who isn't Ansem, Xemnas, or Terra.

I loved it. It was pretty obvious from the start to me that Vemom wasn't who he was supposed to be, but what I loved was how bold it was for it to extend through MG1. I also loved how it answered the question of how BB survived the end of MG1. He didn't, lol.

I firmly believe that the best twist in all of gaming is in Ace Attorney Investigations 2, in which someone that you defended in what seemed like a filler case at the time, Simon Keyes in case 2, was not only the killer for case 5, but actually masterminded just about every event in the entire game, and that all of the seemingly-disconnected cases were actually connected either by telling his backstory, or just playing out the events that he set into motion.

AA6's Dhurke was dead the whole time twist is another notably amazing one, too.

Yeah also liked the twist.

I had a sneaking suspicion that Punished Snake was going to be another clone or something. It's funny because I didn't like the idea that we weren't playing as Big Boss, but when the actual plot reveal happened I loved it. It makes sense too. Punished Snake is deserves his spot as one of the best Snakes.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Following an esoteric trail of breadcrumbs not only unlocks the real ending, but doubles the game world. No story-based twist has ever come close to matching the wonder and excitement I felt as I slowly pieced together the clues and unlocked the Reverse Castle for the first time.

God of War: Atreus is Loki. Damn, I cant wait for the sequel.

Planescape: Torment.

You started the Blood War, you caused all the problems your sidekicks have, you basically kick-started every conflict in the game. Plus every time you die, you come back at the expense of someone else, and their souls are coming for you. Plus the final boss is your own severed mortality and you can beat it to death with logic.

That one wasn't bad, but I was more surprised by the twist that Baldur had been looking for Faye. Not so much the twist itself, but just how much it had been setup throughout the game. From Baldur never, ever saying Kratos' name to saying he "thought you'd be taller" to Faye being short for Laufey, Loki's mythological mom.

Because everything being a video game meant everything that happened in the other games didnt matter it was all scripted. The characters I liked werent real in anyway. I mean yes it is a video game, but it is like reading a book and near the end it tells you hey everything you just read is fake these characters dont even matter in their own reality.

It kills all the emotional attachment/immersion I had with the characters and story as instead of being living relatable beings in their own story/universe, they are instead mindless automatons acting out a script even in their own reality.

They weren't scripted they were fully autonomous and growing. Blair said she wanted to have the game world stored somewhere to continue evolving naturally, since the inhabitants of the Eternal Sphere had literally ceased to be a mere game. It's not that they were scripted at all, their lives were like if you played an extremely advanced The Sims game and occasionally the devs and players intervene, but players can't get strong enough to actually change the course of an entire world. But besides those interventions, all characters developed naturally through evolution in-game.

I may have been wrong but I though they had only began evolving close to so3 as that was the reason they were trying to destroy them now as they were becoming independent and going off script unlike before. Which was why Luthor (if memory serves) was sending monsters to destroy all life so they could keep the base universe but start with new ai instead of scraping everything which they ended up trying at the end.

Not really, he wanted to destroy them because of the symbology stuff implanted into 3 of the party members that made them a danger to people in Luther's world. It was him trying to protect his people, but in a way that was full on universe wide genocide. There was never really a script for people to follow besides general things pushing for how life would evolve and the general instinct to survive. Luther actually was just going to destroy the entire game, he didn't care at all about saving anything from it.
