I don't get it

I wouldn't play something/someone that's completely bottom tier in terms of "this character can't ever be good", like Dr. B or Gon in Tekken 3. But I don't care much about playing the best possible character.

I like the idea of maxing out numbers and stuff (pve) and being as competitive as possible (for pvp), basically just enjoy the idea of winning and tactical domination

For the original question, to an extent. I don't specifically seek it out, but having some vague knowledge on it becomes pretty obvious one way or another.

It's mostly for judging whether the way you would prefer to play is going to be easy or hard. I prefer to stray from it based on preferences/fun, but not going to go all in/out at the expense of my enjoyment. For example mobility vs armor can make a completely different experience for some games to the point one is literally nigh unplayable garbage that's essentially there as a trap. So it helps to know why you're struggling or cruising through.

It's the only way I play.

I try to be competitive and I don't like it when people go for complete joke characters or weapons, but that being said I always try to find my niche.

I don't always look to be the absolute best or most efficient or anything, but it takes the smallest amount of work to get like 80% of the way there.

Once you know how to be good, measurably good against other people at any one game, I don't think you can go back. I will never not know the good builds for a pokemon, how to wavedash, standing FAB, or how to get iron tools within 5 minutes, and that approach of gitting gud leaks into all games since I first learned Street Fighter.

Depends on the game and what I'm looking to get out of it.

If I'm playing a game for the first time, I usually stay on normal difficulty and try to beat it with minimal outside help. If I'm replaying it on max difficulty or something, then I look up guides, strategies, builds etc.

Online games, I usually stay apprised of it but don't always feel it's necessary to play to the max all the time. It's important to me that I feel like I'm pulling my weight on a team (and even better if I'm helping carry them to some extent). I don't hold it against less optimal players and trash them for being 'bad' but feel like it's a fun challenge to me to try and compensate for them.

I try to keep up with metas in competitive games, because I like wining.

In single player games I play what I find fun. I know very well in a game like Dark Souls that certain builds are better than others, but I am not hurting anyone with playing whatever I want.

Not traditional meta but I like how speedrun strategies balance efficiency VS speed and try to come up with similar ideas.
