government collapsed a year ago right before the parliamentary elections, current PM lasted all of 6 months. no one's having kids and we're nearing the point where we have more retirees suckling on their government-sponsored pensions than we have people in the work force paying for said pensions

healthcare system needs a revamp by way of cuts because the costs are ridiculous, but no politician wants to put their face on it because suggesting cuts in this welfare-state shithole is political suicide

politicians are elected on the basis of "who's promising us the most stuff" and when the question of "how are we supposed lower taxes and raise social benefits at the same time" comes up, both the politicians and the ignorant shitstains that elected them bury their heads in the sand and pretend that it's someone else's problem

our only meaningful exports have been technology and lumber, but no one wants our shitty overpriced wood anymore and the nokia 3310 is not considered the pinnacle of cellular phone tech in 2019

the only reason reason why foreign powers have even a slight interest in us is because we happen to share a border with russia, yet we consider ourselves far superior to the "poorer" eastern bloc countries despite being in the exact same fucking position as they are

our national pride is largely based around the 100-day long Winter War, which we LOST over 60 years ago and still manage brag about it like it was some extraordinary achievement

we desperately need high-skill immigrants as labor, but we mainly just bring in refugees that either a) stay unemployed, suckle on the welfare titty and exacerbate the issue or b) continue the grand tradition of setting up a pizzeria or a kebab place that then closes down a few months later because there were no customers because there were 10 other shitty restaurants in the same 1km radius in a country that has a population of roughly 5 and a half million and an average population density of NINETEEN PEOPLE PER SQUARE KILOMETRE

we're a dying nation, so when you see us in the top 10 of some meaningless WHO-built list, take it with a grain of salt

thank you for reading

The country's strong social safety net is just one of the reasons citizens experience a high quality of life. For the second year in a row, Finland has been named the happiest country in the world by the World Happiness Report. ... This year it's in 19th place for overall happiness.

If Finland had truly lost, it would've been absorbed into the USSR much like the Baltic states were.

the soviets had much larger losses in comparison, but what we fought was an ill-equipped, tiny contingent of their military might that also thought we'd just roll over immediately. when the soviets had enough, they bombed the shit out of our capitol and forced us into "peace treaty". we lost, they won

most finns also like to conveniently forget the continuation war where we allied with the nazis to win back lost territory and to claim some that was never ours to begin with

The Soviets bombed Helsinki on the first day of the war, and that didn't break the Finnish morale. In fact, the bombs mostly hit worker districts, in essence hurting people who'd be most likely to align with communists. Anyhow, after 105 days of putting up a fierce resistance, Finland had to sue for peace due to the Soviets breaking through the main Finnish defence lines, and also because Finland was running critically short on artillery ammunition. Finland agreed with the Soviet demands presented before the outbreak of hostilities; however, Finland's independence wasn't lost.
The Soviet main objective, the conquest of Finland, had failed.

Teaming up with the Nazis in the Continuation War is a bit of a murky thing, but the circumstances left very little choice. Following the Nazi occupation of Denmark and Norway, the fall of France, and the Soviet annexation of the Baltics, Finland was pretty much isolated. the UK had its hands full with the Blitz and Sweden was staying out of conflicts by being neutral *coughsellingoretonazisspyingforthealliescough*). The Soviets were putting pressure on Finland by demanding the demilitarization of the land islands, a share of Petsamo's nickel, and the return of equipment Finland had removed from Karelia before its ceding. Moreover, the Soviets had shot down a Finnish passenger plane over the Gulf of Finland in the summer of 1940, and groups with sympathies to or ties with USSR were rioting in the streets, not to mention suspicions of increased military activity near the Finnish-Soviet borders. The sentiments in Finland was that the Soviets hadn't abandoned their desire to take over and annex Finland, one way or the other. It was in late 1940 when Nazis approached Finland with their plans of invading the USSR.
As the phrase goes, the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
