So can I use my anecdotal evidence and say all the people I know are doing well in this economy? Maybe it's the people you know, and not the economy.

Or maybe your local area is struggling.

With the economy in the shape it is you'd think the Republican party wouldn't be losing election after election and bleeding away public office seats up and down the ticket across the country they've held for years

And yet here we are with them struggling lol. If only they would have decided on someone not driving people away from them like Trump

Where are the reports about cost of living increases?

Like who gives a shit if earnings are up 2% if average rent went up 6%

Back when I was renting I got a raise that was about $60/month extra. Then the next month my lease renewed and it was $80/month higher. That shit happens everywhere.

How far back do you want to go? Overall cost of living is DOWN over the last 2 decades thanks to massive drops in energy cost:
https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=26072

The most expensive areas are getting more expensive, but everywhere else is either static or down:
https://www.governing.com/topics/urban/gov-cost-of-living-regions.html

There is definitely a growing problem with LOANS, specifically tuition, that is taking a bigger portion of people's paychecks, which we definitely need to resolve, but actual day-to-day costs aren't increasing in any meaningful way.

If you're talking rent specifically, it's trending roughly at the 20 year average, with some areas increasing well over average (see my earlier comment about expensive areas):
https://www.marketwatch.com/story/rent-inflation-shows-no-signs-of-letting-up-2015-06-18

So if your rent is skyrocketing that again might be a local policy issue and not a national trend.

A lot of the Republican party has this issue in general. They live in sheltered bubbles in the burbs or rich city areas where they think all the poor are the poor urban class and don't actually know about or give a shit about rural America. That's why they have to sell them fear mongering of "the other" as a rationale for their support.
