respect. they could have left you in a dumpster or given you up for adoption. the way you worded that stuff makes it sounds like its coming from a place of temporary anger when you fucked up or talked back. for most parents its coming from a place of love they also could have given you a piece of bread for food every day and made you wear ripped old clothes found on the street but they didn't.

I have a solid relationship with my parents and theyre pretty proud of me, its more based on what I see in general. Like these super patriarch fathers and people in new relationships being petrified of what their parents will think and trying their hardest to make a good impression to earn their parents approval.

So im supposed to be eternally grateful that they kept and raised the human they chose to bring into this world against my will?

Its not like whatever plane of existence (or lack thereof) were in before were born is this eternal Hell theyre rescuing us from.

Yo man. You either need to stop drinking (It's Saturday, who knows) or talk to someone with real life experience on their hands. Cause you're talking wild. Seems like you're feeling really shitty right now and not really channeling that in a healthy way. If this is a reoccurring thing you should probably take steps in trying to make it less likely.

Like I said, I love my parents. Im just being objective.

Now that theyre getting older I help them with physical tasks and generally do what I can to help them out because I love them and theyve been good to me and theyre good people, so its my choice. If they were shitty people and/or deadbeats, I wouldnt give them any more of my time than id give any random person in the world.

And even being the good people that they are, ive never put ANY stock in what they think of my career, relationships, lifestyle, hobbies or interests.

Theyre both totally cool with everything about me and my wife, but if they werent I wouldnt pine for their approval and base my decisions around it, id just be like Oh well, so anyway...

You sound like you care tho. I think it's hard for anyone not to care about that. It's a lot easier to act like someone who doesn't care. But honestly, I don't think you're doing that good of a job with that either. Just admit you care, get to the next step of resolving some frustration.

But I have no frustration. One thing I love about my parents is that theyve never tried to force anything on me or my brother. They dont care what religion we practice or whether or not we have kids, theyre great parents.

Again, im discussing the concept of parent approval itself objectively, not myself or my own parents.

My best friend lost his mom a few months ago. She was only gonna be 48 this year. That mug is going through some things. A lot of logical pent up anger. We never argue tho. It's like depression, you can't just tell someone to stop being angry.

People really do put too much stock into family. We can't let traditions cloud our judgement. If parents refuse to use reason and instead use authoritarian actions, they don't deserve respect.

Tradition? Yes. Family? Well, maybe also yes, but unless you've established a solid surrogate, family is great. If i hit the panic button, i can get 20+ people over to my house ready to dispose of a body no questions asked. Four are friends. The rest are blood.

Family is a wonderful thing and terrible when taken from you. All that love turned only into searing pain and regret. If you havent told them in a while call your parents and tell them you love them even if you just did do it again. One day you wont be able to anymore, and there is no going back.
