When Clinton was impeached, his popularity went up. They'll want to avoid that with Trump, so they just do this thing as concisely as possible then move on. Which is exactly why the Senate is going to drag the trial on as long as possible - also, a bunch of Dem Presidential nominees would be forced off the campaign trail during the course of it.
