Remember when people insisted "privilege" wasn't just a rhetorical tool for bashing individuals or trying to downplay their accomplishments?

Recently I've seen some celebrities / athletes answer these kind of baiting questions with "Okay I see what you're trying to do here and you're not getting me on this." Smart. More people should just do that.

Hollywood is mostly white though. How would she even be able to quantify her privilege either way?

It's not like she has a famous parent or anything. She would have had to earn where she's at.

Nobody likes admitting to the privilege they had. Something both sides should keep in mind before they start getting defensive or pointing fingers.

On a side note, even if she was wrong to have said it, the critical comments are way overreacting to it. You'd think she was caught on film stomping babies to death.

I think part of it is that answering the question takes some actual introspection of one's self, especially if you haven't put a ton of thought into it before. So when it pops up in an interview it can take people by surprise. When you combine that sometimes the questions can seem like it is trying to invalidate your hard work (even if that is not what the question is trying to do) you can get some not great answers.

The current trend is to find actresses who are not from her background to appear woke.

I wouldnt have even answered the question. It had nothing to do with the interview and was an obvious ploy to get her to slip up and say something outrageous artists could latch onto.

I don't think privilege is necessarily a bad thing though. I also think everyone has privilege in one way or another. Like, if I compare my upbringing to my GF's (who's Black), I can sort of see where I had privilege in one area and where she had privilege in another.

I think the issue is, people denying that they do have privilege.

Reading her bio I don't see her born into the entertainment industry.
Her parents were well off, but not entertainment people. Her great uncle was an actor.
At about age 9 she got a scholarship to attend some dancing school.

Looking at Boyega, his father is a minister. Doesn't sound like he grew up dirt poor.
Similar to Ridley, at age 9 he joined some acting school because a scout saw him in a play.

This article compares the two and exclaims one is privileged and one is not.

It is very obvious what they mean and it is not what you just claimed about "groomed for entertainment".

She definitely had more wealth than him, but that doesn't seem to be why she is where she is.
Her sisters aren't.
Her and boyega both started at the ripe age of 9 and began working;
Yes working, to become actors.

So she is probably right to compare herself to him.

She isn't the first member of her family to step into showbusiness, as her great-uncle Arnold Ridley was an actor, playing Private Godfrey in British sitcom Dad's Army. Meanwhile, her grandfather, John Ridley was head of engineering at the BBC from 1950 to 1965. Both men received Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire honors (O.B.E.).
Boyega, who plays Finn in the sci-fi series, has previously spoken about having to apply for a hardship fund to join a local theater as a youngster as he pursued his interest in acting.
