Never cared for the song, but really... I thought it was just stopping her from driving out in a stupid storm. But the lyric 'what's in this drink?' Makes me understand why people thought otherwise, but other than that the update was stupid and both songs are stupid

when she says whats in this drink she is asking if it's alcoholic. that's all. the song is about her wanting to stay and have sex but pretending like she has all these excuses to go. because she doesn't want to appear like a slut. the song was written by a husband and wife. and it's not about date rape at all. people in 2019 fail to understand the society and humor style of like 100 years ago

But the lyric 'what's in this drink?' Makes me understand why people thought otherwise
This was a stock joke of the time that meant someone was going to use their drinking [of a weak alcoholic drink] as license to do something they wouldn't, or that they were accusing the person of pouring weak drinks. In this case, it's the former.

The whole song could not possibly be more about these people wanting to do it. Every single excuse of hers is about the way society will treat them, not her own trepidation of will. It is f'ing ridiculous that people act like no teenager or young person has ever had to leave somewhere, not wanted to, and needed to play the better angel of themselves against friends trying to talk them out of it. It was one of my most related-to Christmas songs as a teen who had to drive home in the snow and ice or sleep on the floor of my parents' office instead of at a friend's house scores of times because my parents would have rather had a dead virgin than a sexual deviant for a child.

I haven't heard the new version, but I heard some BS last year that changed all the lyrics to things like "I understand 'no' means 'no'" and "You're free to go." That shit and preemptive consent waivers are HUGE red flags; no one wants to be around someone who says shit like "I proooooomise not to rape you! :3" because they definitely will. The only lines that would need to be changed would be:

"I really can't stay" > "I wish I could stay."
Sets the stage even clearer.

"Say, what's in this drink?" > "Who cares what they think?"
Updates a stock joke that was hackneyed before Bugs Bunny was cool, as well as still provide the same spirit of near-concession from her perspective. That line also has his line rhyme 'there' with 'there,' so it's not very much weaker lyrically with the repeated 'think.'

Reminds me of Possum Kingdom by Toadies.

Sounds like its a song about a guy telling a girl to fuck him or he'll kill her. Actually about a guy who sacrificed himself as part of a cult and became some sort of demonic fire/ash thing and wants someone to spend eternity with him.

My issue with the song is exactly the defense that gets put forth all the time. The woman has to make it a joke and playfully flirt because she's not allowed to express her desire to get dicked down
Exactly! I mean the fact that she's at her man's house unchaperoned by friends or whatever is also suspect. In the time the song was written only "those women" went to a man's house unchaperoned. Her whole side of the song is a way for to say "well I tried to leave" and his side is "well it is ridiculously cold outside so what kind of gentleman would I be to let you go out there in that blistering cold". Basically they were going to do it regardless and needed to get their story straight for when the people talk.

Zikten is 100% correct and anyone who finds anything vaguely problematic in Baby Its Cold Outside is displaying ignorance.

It is, if anything, a song about a woman in a time where she wouldve been shunned by society for spending the night coming up with a good excuse to do what she wants.

No, zikten is absolutely right on this one and the people that think its problematic are just morons who dont understand the context of how a "proper lady" was expected to act in 1940's and why the lady was playing coy.

It's problematic because of a couple different reasons.
  1. When someone says "what's in this drink?" nowadays it is accepted to be alcohol or drug related, leading to date rape.
  2. Women in our society are conditioned against saying no. Having a woman in a song say 'No' several times while the man is pushing is setting up people who are listening for failure. Men are shown in media that persistence will let you "win" the girl. This is problematic regardless of gender.
  3. Society marches on. Men and women can have casual sex and no one cares what "the neighbors" are thinking. Shaming people for sex is a problem too.

Things that were acceptable 50+ years ago are not done today because we know better. Like I said, I'm not calling for it to be banned. But to ignore the many problems the song has because "B-b-b-but it's a product of its time" is just willfully ignoring reality out of some sense of misguided "but the SJWs" and "muh censorship"

The fact is, context changes. Why does Zikten keep on getting modded for posting mandelas? Because of Nazis ruining it for everyone.
It happens all the time, something gets ruined by something else in the future. This song is no different.

Take the L. This isnt a matter of it used to be acceptable to be racist!, its projecting a meaning onto the song that does not exist. There is nothing from society to march on from in the song except perhaps her concern that her nosy aunt will be judgy.

Im a bleeding heart liberal. Dont feed me the MUH SJWs crap. It is a flirty love song that is no more offensive than any song in which a girl flirtily plays hard to get, of which there are hundreds.
