UBI only works if you also implement rent control. Otherwise the money just goes right into the pockets of landlords.

What's interesting is, I Like Toast brought up "just learn a skill people value". It's actually not bad advice. Didn't the US used to have a lot of apprenticeships programs? I think many people would be willing to learn if they were basically trained up by their future employers.

There are a couple problems with that, though. For one, not everyone can actually do that, as many of these skills don't pay nearly enough when learning for a person to make do, forcing incredibly unhealthy work schedules. For two, there are a lot of legitimately important professions and jobs that can't be replaced by automation but also can't really pay well. It's the biggest problem in general with my career(addiction recovery), and a lot of similar careers that serve the public through nonprofits.

So then do like I did and have the financial responsibility to save and invest, then you have the money to afford such things.

Save and invest ...what exactly? I can't get money to begin with.
+++

I did it, and so can others. Life isn't easy, and there will be times that you will fail... but it's how you handle those failures that ultimately define you.

Wrong, success and happiness are finite resources, and those born of higher status already got it all. There's nothing left for anyone at the bottom, me and the other 200 homeless people I share shelter space with are proof enough of that, and lord knows how many more homeless out there prove it further.
+++

And just so you know, I was raised in a lower income family, but now I'm in the lower end of upper class. Yes, some luck was involved... but more in the sense that it was opportunities that arose and I went after them; everything else was purely hardwork and determination.

If you were actually raised lower class you would know that things like "opportunity" and "hard work" are a myth, that upward mobility is fucking make-believe.

Born in the gutter, die in the gutter, that's all me and a lot of other peopke will get out of our shit lives and there's literally nothing we can do about it. If anything, all this talk to gut jobs and wages is only going to hurt the middle class, and all the while they'll be blaming people like me instead of realizing all their woes are coming from *above* them, not from below.

I'm not sure if this pertains to it but I've read through this article several times because it's downright depressing if it's accurate:

https://www.usatoday.com/pages/interactives/news/rigged-forced-into-debt-worked-past-exhaustion-left-with-nothing/

It's in 4 parts.
I have no idea what it's like for immigrants, but I know a lot of immigrants haul loads for big companies on the weekends. It's not horrible in theory.

Start out pay as a dock person is $16.71/Hour. Top out in 3 years at $21.80/Hour. Usually only work 39 hours/week. Weekends off. 13 Days of PTO/year with rollover making you capable of holding 120 pto hours maximum before they make you take time off. 7 paid holidays/year + 1-3 unpaid shutdowns.

But the work environment is an OSHA violating mother tucker. Only 1 break(unpaid) for an 8 hour shift, 80+ propane powered lifts running at peak unload times (carbon monoxide), no climate control at all for cold winters or hot summers (no radiant heaters or fans). The worst part really is the flavor of the week where we are constantly being told to do our jobs differently because it's never enough.

They set a goal, we reach it, then it's an even more impossible goal. It's the "make sure you do your job 100% correctly, but we have to get drivers out of here the second they arrive, so forget it this time, we'll tell at you if the freight gets damaged"

Drivers will come from 3-6 hours away, work the dock for 1-2 hours, the drive back to their terminal. So if you have the top bid for a route, you CAN have an 8 hour day a driver and still make $60,000 year, but if you want the money you'd be going for the 5+ hour routes which end up paying $95,000+.

So most of the veteran drivers end up working 16-18 hour days, 5 days a week, and hate every minute of it

unskilled labor is actually the labor most of this country depends on.

Also, one could argue many highly paid jobs are given to friends and family, the whole its who you know thing. I mean, look at Betsy Devos.
