I've heard from some that it's more beneficial to only spend a little of your credit line even if you pay it all off.

One of the metrics used in your credit score is the amount of credit you use, versus the amount of credit available.

The most important thing obviously is to pay it off, so it doesn't matter that much. If you are worried about your score then you can always get another credit card, which will increase you total percentage, and then continue to responsibly use your credit line. This will temporarily hurt you score, but will bump it up after a few months.

The little ding to your score is for the hard credit check to get the new card. There are free websites that explain these things and you can (soft) check your score for free without affecting it as well.
