I know power leveling is not really a great idea since everything scales with you, but using Stone to JP up quickly at the start is still a viable option, right?

The only thing that scales with you are monsters and random encounters. This really only effects one map if you over level

If you want to gain JP quickly, put everyone in the same Job Class. If a unit is a Monk and they gain 10 JP [Job Points] Everyone else in the party will gain like 1-3 Monk JP as well. So if everyone is a Monk, you'll gain Monk levels faster

Other things to note -

  • Reaction chance = Brave. Got 70 Brave? Counter will happen 70% of the time
  • Faith effects magical stuff. Both bad and good. If your unit has low Faith they will take less damage from spells and do less damage with them. It will be harder to cast Slow on them but it will also be hard to cast Haste of them
  • Check the Turn count for spells. Before you cast it, hit Right and you can see when it will go off in relation to the turn order of everyone

Definitely aim for the jp up skill. I can't remember which class it was on, but it's one of the basic ones.

So at the start I should just have my entire team be Squire? Weird.

You probably want some chemists unless you're doing something extremely specific.

You can grind out enought to get gained jp up in in one fight. Shouldn't take too long. Hell, if you leave the chemist as the last enemy and let him heal himself you can probably do it in the first chapter 1 fight. You can check your jp totals in the middle of a fight.

If you want to do "power grinding" for the more expensive job unlocks, you can do it without gaining a ton of levels by exploiting the XP gain calculations. Basically, the amount of XP you get from a non-lethal successful action is equal to 10 + (target level - your level), minimum 1. If your action kills a unit (for the first time), add 10 XP.

The easiest way to exploit this is to bring a low level unit into battle along with four other units, and once you've subdued the battle and are ready to grind have those four units stand around tossing stones (or otherwise doing low damage) at the low level unit along with occasional healing. Useful for e.g. unlocking Dark Knight or Mime without gaining a bunch of levels.

It has everything you need for a basic JP farming kit.

Stone/Focus (and Tailwind for Ramza) to earn low-effort, nigh-infinite JP per battle.

JP Boost to increase the amount you get (nearly doubles it).

Move+1 to help stay ahead of most monsters/early game humans who don't have Battle Boots/Germinas Shoes yet.

only random battles scale with you.

storyline battles are preset on level.

Throw Stone is fine for quick jp grinding. I've always been a fan of melee + potion spam on my own team. Accumulate works but it's steep on the JP cost. Just get Gained JP Up support ability out of squire, maybe move +1, and move OUT of that worthless class.

But you can stay Squire as Ramza and be fine

But yeah, dont worry too much too much about grinding out JP. Just enjoy

You could always use that JP glitch.

Saves you a ton of trouble doing boring random ass battles.

The VERY first thing I do is have two squires and two chemists. I'll run the first battle area that you can repeat and get the squires JP up, then switch jobs with the chemists and then get them JP up.
