Inspired by the swinging man topic. Is the wheel of Dennis spinning clockwise, counter-clockwise, or both?

This gif wasnt created with the intent of it being some sort of optical illusion, but it kinda turned out that way.

Yep! A buddy of mine made the initial, static gif, and I used some free online gif animator to make it spin since I figured that was good for a laugh. The whole thing is turning counter, for sure. If you focus first on the inner face or the spot right in between the top of the inner face and outer ring, then expand the focus to the whole thing you can tell. But if you look away and look back it always seems to look like the outer is clockwise.

I have no idea what the science behind it is, but am guessing that our brains default to seeing something in clockwise if it looks too close to tell one way or the other. Or maybe because he is facing right. If you cover up the middle face its very difficult to see counter.

There's one face on the outer ring that isn't like the rest. It's sunken back inbetween 2 of the other faces and exposed a little more and rotates counter-clockwise. You can't see it when your brain is processing it going clockwise, but once you see it, the outer ring will change direction. Cool illusion.
