Avatar is such an incredible case in pop culture. It came out, made a bajillion dollars and then largely disappeared. You would think that the number 1 movie of all time would have more of a cultural impact, but it just isn't there. There aren't any hardcore fans. There isn't all sorts of merchandise. Nobody references it in either general conversation nor does it get referenced by other media. And I haven't met a single person who is looking forward to the sequel.

Compare that to something like Inception. It had no sequels, but it literally redefined the word Inception for the greater populace. The Matrix had one good movie and too disappointing and largely panned sequels. But it gets quoted regularly. It gets referenced regularly.
