Why do people still go to ER for kidney stones? They always make you wait 8 hours and do nothing but bill you $3,000.

Imagine, if you will, sudden intense pain, that you've never experienced before. It's really scary, and painful.

Hmmmm what would a person do in that situation?

Can you pee at all with kidney stones? Or is it just like trying to push out pain with no pee coming through?

Real men, get in a fetal position and cry to God for it to go away. Emergency is for cowards.

Sorry to hear that, TC. The thought of Kidney Stones always scared me. Part of the reason why I kicked soda a couple of years back >_>

Yeah, I feel ya on that. Theres a fine line between not wanting to go to the ER and going anyway because youre not sure what the Hell is wrong with you, but it hurts so much you dont want to take a chance.

I've been to the ER for them twice. Yes, they are extremely painful. If it's a calcium stone, you will likely get told to drink plenty of water every day and limit or avoid high-oxalate foods. Family history is also a significant factor. The first time you pass a stone, it's highly likely you'll form and pass another one at some point in your life, regardless of your lifestyle. You just want to reduce the chances of forming them.

**** that

They said it was a very small one that I should be able to pass easily. What does that feel like? Is the relief immediate?

You can pee. For me, with both major stones and a few minor ones, i felt like i had to pee constantly.

Ehhhh a first timer should absolutely go, if only to have that shit explained to them.

My 2nd major stone, I recognized it for what it was and just toughed it out. I was NOT gonna go through all that dr shit again.

Sorry, I was joking :p. Though, I have other stomach complications, so I probably wouldn't identify it right away anyway.

Make sure you only use those until you don't actually need them. The withdrawal is a whole other miserable ordeal.

What did they tell you about food and drinks to avoid? For me it was anything high in oxalate, most commonly (in my diet) chocolate and soda, but also things like spinach, rhubarb, almonds and cashews, beets, etc.
Didn't really specify. On the forms I have to take home says avoid high oxalate, high sodium, and protein.

Also, uh oh I've been eating a lot of spinach lately.

They told you to drink soda? Does white chocolate work? Or they didn't specify?

Appreciate the answers. I've wanted someone to ask these questions for a looong ass time. I feel like doctors didn't have personal experience when I asked. These answers are way more clear cut.

No, avoid soda and chocolate. White chocolate is not as bad since it isn't real chocolate, as it's missing that high-oxalate cocoa powder.

Damn, my brain is so broken. Swear I read that twice before responding. My bad. Good to know and be corrected. I was about to double down on those foods if I felt a stone >_>
