Lawmakers in West Virginia who consumed raw milk after passing a bill legalizing the unpasteurized dairy beverage have fallen ill, but they insist the flu is to blame.

Now, the state Department of Health and Human Resources is looking into the situation.

Pat McGeehan, one of the sick lawmakers, told WSAZ in Charleston that a stomach bug has been making the rounds.

"There's definitely ... some other colleagues that have similar symptoms that I've been experiencing," McGeehan told the TV station.

Several lawmakers say a delegate who sponsored the bill, Scott Cadle (R - Mason, 13), brought in the drinks.

"[Cadle] caught me in the hallway, offered a cup to me, and you want to try to be a gentleman," McGeehan said. "I had a small sip and walked away and tossed the rest of it."

"I highly doubt raw milk had anything to do with it, in my case," McGeehan said.
Still, the lawmakers' plight has been picked up by national media outlets, which have seized on the apparent irony of the situation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns against drinking raw milk
because it can contain "dangerous microorganisms."

Hey guys, here's an easy home remedy for making your raw milk safer for consumption!

• Pour the raw milk into the stainless steel pot. ...
• Slowly heat the milk to 145 degrees Fahrenheit, stirring occasionally. ...
• Hold the temperature at 145 F for at least 30 minutes. ...
• Remove the pot of milk from the heat and place it in a sink or large bowl filled with ice water. ...
• Store the paste- er.... bactofree milk in the refrigerator.

Hey guys, maybe you should make a law about having bactofree milk be required for sale and consunption!

this is funny but it might actually just be a coincidence. raw milk is legal to sell in 13 states already, including California where i am. i used to have this co-worker when i worked at Walmart who was an uber-religious farmgirl type who said she drank raw milk sometimes, but it was expensive so it was more like an every once in awhile treat than it was the norm. people already drink it all the time with no negative effects. but yeah, it's definitely possible that this particular time it made people sick, or that it was really a coincidence and it was some flu or stomach bug.

The law isnt in place because people think it WILL contain enough bad bacteria to make you sick every single time, it's because it can happen enough ti warrant the law.

The problem isnt raw milk, it's time. Time fir the bacteria to reproduce into numbers that can have an effect. Which comes into play when delivering said goods to the buyers.

Despite my previous post having fun with the situation, I am (slightly, it's a hobby) affected by the availability of raw milk, because I enjoy making my own cultures for yogurt, curds and cheese (aquiring rennet has always bugged me, because I feel like why am I doing this if im still using some shit I buy in a bottle, but yellow bedstraw grows wildly around me and doesnt leave a bitter taste like thistle... though it can only harden cheese up to semisoft... )

But I wont drink the milk raw. There is a reason humans came up with all these ways of preserving milk, and it might just be a coincidence... but they all involving heating the milk for extended periods of time and culturing bacteria that is safe to eat that also kills of bacteria that is not.

Maybe humans were onto something.
