A passenger plane carrying 180 people bound for the Ukrainian capital Kiev has crashed a few minutes after taking off from Tehrans main international airport, according to Iranian media outlets.

The Boeing 737-800 operated by Ukrainian International Airlines took off from Imam Khomeini international airport at 6.12am Tehran time and crashed about eight minutes later, according to flight tracking websites.

Early indications suggested the crash did not appear to have links to Wednesday mornings missile strikes on bases in Iraq hosting US and coalition troops.

If this plane took off at around 6:15 am Tehran time, that was just under two hours ago (they are GMT+3.5)

The implication this was shot down would mean

1) something is happening no one is even aware of
2) someone launched a missile *extremely* close to Tehran

Small update in the article

Boeing released a brief statement saying it was aware of the media reports and was gathering more information.

A video purportedly of the crash circulated by the ISNA news agency showed the aircraft burning as it fell from the sky.

No significant safety issues have been raised with the 737-800, though it belongs to the same family as the 737 Max 8 aircraft, which has been grounded since suffering two fatal crashes within six months in Indonesia and Ethiopia. However, the 737-800 operates with a different software system to the one implicated in the Max 8 crashes.

The Ukraine International Airlines jet was less than four years old.

Victims of the crash included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three Britons, according to Ukraines foreign minister, Vadym Prystaiko. Most of the passengers were en route to Kyiv, transiting through there to other destinations.

Flight data from the Ukrainian Airlines Boeing 737-800 is openly available online. It shows that the plane climbed normally after taking-off from Tehran, before it crashed, carrying 176 people.
It reached nearly 8,000ft (2,400m) before the aircraft's data suddenly disappears.

This is unusual and would suggest some type of catastrophic incident on board the plane. We have no evidence at this stage to tell us what caused the incident.

According to a former air crash investigator, any suggestion of engine failure feels premature. This possibility can't be ruled out at this early stage but an airliner such as the Boeing 737-800 is designed to keep flying if there is an engine failure.

Plus, if there was a failure then we would normally expect the flight data to show the plane's climb becoming less steep.

It's possible it was something mechanical, but it's also possible the plane was shot down. Probably a lot of nervous AA gun operators in Iran right now. But they wouldn't do this intentionally: it would be far too inflammatory, all at a time when they've been furiously plying third-parties diplomatically.

I don't think I've seen anyone claim it was anything other than, at worst, someone panicking and accidentally shooting it down. However, mechanical failure is looking less likely given the BBC info above about the plane data going dark and the rumors elsewhere in this topic about Iran refusing to hand over the black box.

Yeah apparently this is the best/easiest/cheapest and thus most popular flight route from Canada to Iran and back (Toronto -> Kyiv -> Tehran) so that's why there's so many Canadians (returning from holidays).

Also I found out Iran doesn't recognize dual-nationality (not really shocked), so Iran and Ukraine are reporting different figures for the nationalities of people killed on the flight.

Ethiopia refused to hand the black boxes over to Boeing/the US when ET302 crashed and sent them to Europe instead.
