Got damn, I can't not tear up. Between Boromir's death, Frodo reflecting on if he should go on alone, Sam following after him, and Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli basically being like "well shit, we already lost the hobbit... might as well fuck up as many orcs as we can." it's so beautiful. And it's only the first in a trilogy. No dumb cliffhanger in the middle of the drama, just a satisfying conclusion that leads right into the next adventure.

I'm doing a rewatch of the trilogy this weekend >_>

Honestly every time I do this I find things to be amazed about in these movies.

Very rarely do you get movies based on fantasy in general, let alone done well and with attention to detail and high production values. I thoroughly enjoyed them all. Hobbit too.

Yeah I seem to remember it was literally a cliffhanger with Frodo and Sam hanging off some rocks looking over at Mordor lol

They moved Boromir's death to the end of Fellowship instead of the start of Towers because Sean Bean isn't contractually allowed to survive a movie

nah, cliffhanger is what the did at the end of desolation of smaug literally ending the movie in the middle of the dragon attack. It doesn't mean there are no plot threads left unwound. Obviously everyone knows we're getting more with these characters, but Fellowship told the story it needed to and ends with the Fellowship fractured and set off on their own journeys. It's a full story in one movie, nicely wrapped up at the end.

Ha, I wonder. I watched the movies before reading the books and that threw me off after I finished Fellowship the book and was like "gee, maybe the movie is taking more liberties than I thought." I liked how they did the movie though, gave Fellowship a bit more of a true climax with that final battle.

Having had no prior knowledge of LOTR before watching the movie, I somehow thought, two hours into the movie, that there was still a ton of movie left since they barely reached Mordor and had to make their way into mount doom and destroy the ring.

i felt pretty silly when the credits rolled while desperately clamoring for more since it definitely felt like it left me hanging even though it was a definite ending to the chapter.

One of the greatest films of all time. Film gives it all, and it shows. Well done Peter Jackson and team. And of course, the legend himself, J.R.R Tolkien for writing the greatest piece of fantasy literature, ever.

Fellowship is the best of the trilogy I think because it walks the line between following the books and practicality the best. Two Towers takes to many liberties with the battle of helm's deep and also with Faramir's character. I love Return but it has issues as well.

Agreed. The casting for it was perfect too.

My only complaint was that they didn't show Tom Bombadil.

Fellowship ends in just the right place, imo. It feels like a proper close to Act I but still teases more to come. I think of a "cliffhanger" as ending on a more immediate moment of suspense, with a dramatic choice or consequence about to happen in the next few seconds.

For the longest time I thought ROTK was the best of the trilogy, but there's really something special about the first film. There is something about Frodo stepping out Bag End with Sam and having this quest turn into something bigger than any one of them anticipated. It's such a fun concept, executed perfectly. So many memorable moments, plus one of the best death scenes in cinema.
