$500 isn't particularly a lot, so I guess the scratch tickets just because it'd be a bit fun.

$500 is nice but nothing all that special. The lottery tickets could be life changing, and even if it's a bunch of losers, you're bound to get at least half that back. Totally worth taking the risk.

The jackpot, yes, but not the lower winnings.

The question posed by the OP has an objective better answer, if you spend the time to calculate the odds and factor in opportunity costs, but... AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT.

Give me the scratch-offs. I don't have any current bills or obligations that I'd need $500 for, so the prospect of possibly getting more than that for free is better than some random cash I'm going to waste anyway.

It is worth noting that losing lottery tickets can be deducted from your taxes if you happen to win enough to need to declare your winnings as taxes (or some other form of gambling such as casino winnings). Odds of winning a prize on a $1 scratcher are about 1 in 4 to 5 with the average winning ticket being worth about $2.50. So realistically you are *on average* making a decision between $500 cash and $500 in winning tickets plus $500 in tax deductions. I'd argue the scratchers are worth it for the offhand chance of getting something better unless you REALLY need the guaranteed cash. Source: Worked in a gas station when they first started selling lottery tickets in my state. Had to learn all this crap for the job

EDIT: Source for $1 ticket odds. Trying to find average payout source, I know I used to have it

Which is why I was using them. That's worst case scenario. The best odds my state has are on $30 tickets where the odds of winning are around 1 in 2.75 and the average prize is around $50 IIRC

in my state, the tickets should have a higher EV. even discounting the harder hits.

$1000 worth of $20 tickets would pay out, on average, $750. Or $620 ignoring any hit harder than 1200:1
$1000 worth of $2 tickets would pay out, on average, $660. Or $510 ignoring any hit harder than 1200:1

I'd gamble, unless you forced me to take $1 tickets. those might have a low enough EV, plus they're annoying and the Free Tickets are an added annoyance.

Easily $500. Who the fuck wants to scratch off $1000 worth of tickets, that sounds like a nightmare, the you would have all that scratch off dust everywhere for the end of time. Then you also have to go find somewhere to cash in the winning tickets

Yeah but in this scenario even a 40% "loss" would be a 20% profit over taking the $500. Like, the odds are EXTREMELY in your favor that $1000 worth of scratchers pays back over $500 even if you get the worst odds $1 tickets. As long as the EV of your tickets is AT LEAST 50% of their purchase price then you'd break even with the cash
