It's not really a good film, though. Fanboy rage aside plenty of people have highlighted the pacing problems, the B-plots that don't resolve meaningfully, the character inconsistencies, the prequel quality CGI casino scene, the weak central story, etc.

It gets praise for being bluntly political and moody in a series that's historically been a simple good vs evil space adventure, but the basic structure has been torn apart by cinemaphiles for good reason.

Star Wars has always been political. Also this post is hilarious, "cinemaphiles" the word you're looking for is cinephile and it's been more well received amongst those types than most Star Wars films.

I would have loved to see how Rian wanted to end the trilogy.

Can he get a novelization of how he would have ended it? It would have been infinitely more interesting than what JJ did.

I think Rian Johnson has excellent cinematography and shot composition. As a director, he's fantastic. But he's on that short list of good directors that should never ever have any say in a script.

And for what it's worth, I think the best single scene is actually the Death Star eclipse attack in Rogue one. It is still in my mind the single most stunning shot in the entire franchise.

Knives Out Director Rian Johnson Earns First Oscar Nomination For Best Original Screenplay

And crash won best picture in 2004. Are we pretending that every Oscar nomination is 100% objectively right now?

If Knives Out is really that good, then that's all the more evidence that he didn't even try with the Last Jedi. Again, there are plenty of non-biased analyses as to how poorly written that movie is from a structural standpoint, no matter how hard it makes some people that it pissed off series fans.

I guess I'm just pointing out that you're saying he's a director that shouldn't write films solely because of a sci-fi sequel you didn't like.

I'm just going to repeat the first part of my first post above that got cut out and immediately ignored because it's easier to make it about whether or not somebody liked the movie.

But I will leave it at that. This many years after the movie, it's not like anybody's mind is going to be changed and we'll just have to find out in a couple of decades if people look at the Last Jedi like Empire, or attack of the Clones.

Going by Knives Out Rian Johnson will probably have the most critically acclaimed career of any director and writer in the sequel trilogy.

I think of he gets the opportunity to do a movie with his own characters he'd do a much better job. Can't say the same about Abrams.

I agree with that. I think it would have been a much smarter move to go with the original plan of letting him have a new trilogy set somewhere else in the Galaxy that's completely disconnected from the main movies. Rather than what they ended up going with, which is letting him make the middle movie in a Trilogy and then (possibly) canceling his trilogy after backlash.

For what it's worth, I also don't think Abrams is a particularly good writer. I think he's very good at soft reboots and safe movies that hit all of the major beats that people expect. He's generally good at action cinematography as well. But he's not the person you put in charge of a movie that you want to make waves.

I think a lot of the vitriol comes from the general culture going on when it came out. I mean fuck the Anti-SJWs couldn't stop shitting their pants over an Asian woman and a woman in power with purple hair.

It was a great movie, maybe best in the ST (need to watch TFA again) and it attempted something new instead of playing it safe.

I dunno. I know a lot of people who are outright boycotting going to see the new one because of TLJ. I would bet its a good reason why its not doing as well as it should be. It didnt really set anything up to make you want to watch what happens next either.

Im no SW nerd so I wasnt offended at dumb stuff like purple hair chick or Luke. I genuinely thought it was a bad movie and dont really feel a desire to watch the new one until its on Disney+ or redbox. To be fair I also thought TFA was lazy (reusing so many past elements). And I just dont really care for any of the main characters at all.
