You are at a restaurant. You notice a bar serving alcoholic drinks. You want a cocktail or something, but don't see a menu for alcoholic drinks . Do you ask for one or do you walk up to the bar and describe what kind of drink you want?

at a music venue or something they probably dont have menus but its not cringe to ask....granted, they might be super busy serving drinks to stop and talk for you for very long if you dont know exactly what you want

how am I supposed to know what drinks I can get if I can't see a list of things they have? Just seeing what bottles they have on the shelves isn't enough.

familiarize yourself with the kind of drinks you like? at least know which of the basics you like. generally, most bars are gonna be well stocked. barebones ingredients you can count on having are seltzer/soda, lime/lemon/orange juice, simple syrup, and each of your base liquors(vodka, whiskey, tequila, gin, rum).

also quintessential cocktails will have the same name wherever you go unless you're at a place with an incompetent bar. you're overthinking it.

Bars are proud of the signature cocktails and unless they have a blackboard in the background, how else are you gonna find out what's on offer? Just ask for the damn menu.

I like gin and kombucha a lot. gin and soda if they don't have kombucha

but honestly for the most part I prefer beer

I'm actually glad someone asked this - my girlfriend always asks for cocktail menus, regardless of the context. Good to know she's generally not insane.

She hates beer though so I don't really blame her for not doing what I do when no menu is around and "just get a beer"

You should learn to not worry about how you come off. Being genuine is more respectable than any of these lil things. Who cares if you look like you don't know what you're doing. People will respect the honesty over the knowledge. I don't think I've ever felt judged for asking dumb questions. Of course, in this situation, it's kind of their job to not seem judgey. I'm just a firm believer that people respect straight forward honest people and I haven't had enough push back in life to change my mind. I went through the over thinking and anxious phase, it's all work, no pay off. You gotta train your mind out of that shit.

I overcame my anxiety a long time ago but this topic is speaks to me on a deep level and is dredging up some interesting nostalgia.

bartenders are there to give you drinks
if they don't have something, they'll let you know
if they don't have anything you want, ask them for a suggestion or leave

I dont drink alcohol so I dont have that issue ever.
