tbh everyone there feels like they matter to the streamer but in reality they don't, unless the viewer count is single digits or unless you are in the streamer's favored circle

maybe it's a good thing to have that feeling? but people are lying to themselves

It varies by stream. Most who attend mine are friends I've made through the site over the last 6 years and we treat each other with enough respect. If we're not discussing the game or whatever is on our mind then they're usually setting off my sound commands.

The person playing is also a big factor in what they allow in the chat. I've been in some that just didn't care and the chats were vulgar.

I only really follow one channel, and the chat there is hilarious and really adds to the experience.

It's alright on smaller channels. If there are more than 1,000 viewers or so, the chat isn't worth reading.

Are there controls on the streamer side to filter chat? I ask because I've watched twitch streams of some larger streamers and from my view the chat is just an endless incoherent blur of nonsense. Yet streamers seem to have the ability to catch things and respond to them while also actively doing whatever they are streaming.

There are automod controls on the site so you can block words and terms. I'm not sure if it applies solely to your own chat, or the site overall. I have the Streamlabs Chatbot and it has word filters and more as well.

I meant more like subscriber only chat or something to filter those 1000 messages a minute down to 10.

There's also slow mode, so the streamer can set a minimum time between comments

Yes there's slow mode, follower only, subscriber only.

a lot of it is just dumb shit

"hey look there's a letter displayed on screen, let's all repeat it like we're fucking four"
"hey look it's a black person, let's all spam a certain set of emotes"
there's all the dumb fad posting too

there's the occasional small chat that's actually good
