I honestly think the world is massively underpopulated. People latch on to the problem of "running out of resources", just because that is a very visceral and easy to understand problem, but there would be much less suffering in the world with more people, not less.

Nope and if it's a food shortage problem that's false with the mega tons of food we waste/throw away a year.

Remember watching this a long time ago. One thing that struck me was the emergence of asocial mice as the population grew past a certain point.

I agree that eternal growth is not feasible, and so at some point population growth will need to level off.
In my opinion, the solutions to this are:
  • Improved access to sexual health and contraception
  • Improved maternity and paediatric care (including public health, immunisation) to reduce maternal and child mortality, particularly in developing areas
  • Improved access to education and work opportunities for women
Pretty much every country in the world has seen fertility rates decline to 2.0 or below as these things have improved.

I believe it is overpopulated. It's all very well saying "it can support 12 billion" but the question is should it have to? At what cost? Do we cut down all the rainforests for farmland? Do we cram a 100 million at a time into megacities?

That all sounds dystopian to me. People need space. We live closer and more connected than ever but people are increasingly reclusive. I'm not surprised.

We are already a verminous plague on this earth. At some point it will boil over, not in our lifetimes but eventually, if we don't control population growth, things will get really bad imho.

My two cents on the issue.

The reason why we're a "verminous plague" is not because there's too many of us. If there were a lot less of us we could still be a verminous plague, just a small one. Or there could be a LOT more of us, and we don't have to be a verminous plague about it. The Earth can only hold so many people who can still live reasonably comfortably, that's true, but we're far from that number. The problems that are blamed on "overpopulation" have more to do with learning how to live with ourselves and the environment than they do with there being too many of us. That's a simplistic, dumb cop-out.

I'm not against taking reasonable steps for population control by the way. At some point we may very well have to. But we'll never ever even get to that point if we don't solve other problems first.
We could also take those steps already. There's nothing inherently wrong with them, on the contrary. But they're not what's going to solve the "overpopulation" problems. Those will keep cropping up perhaps cyclically until we truly learn to deal with them.

this is exactly the kind of thing that the Kurzgesagt video i posted goes in-depth into, and is the very reason why true overpopulation will likely never be an issue. as long as we people of the "1st world" nations who have seen our birth rates level off already due to modern advances in medicine and technology can work together to promote and facilitate these same advances worldwide.

Yeah, that's one good point.

The real issue is how we use and distribute our resources in tandem with an increasing population. It's unbalanced and wasteful.
