Received my license on my 16th birthday. It was just coincidence that it worked out that way.

19-21

Mom wouldn't let me have a license when I lived at home (didn't really need one anyway I guess).
After I joined the military I was at a very long tech school in a very nice area where I could just walk everywhere.
Didn't need one until I moved to the east coast and was stationed somewhere I couldn't just walk easily :|

22 or 23.. Didn't really need one before that, so it wasn't a priority, but I definitely don't regret having it and a car, really makes life easier.

Note I'm in Canada, BC to be exact and the rules differ by province.

Here (earliest at 16 y/o) you need to start with a written test to get your L or Learner's License. You have restrictions on how late you can drive, and must be accompanied by a a fully licensed driver who sits in the passenger seat. You are allowed one extra passenger. Of course at this point you've likely only taken the written test so now is the time to practice driving. One year after getting your L you can now go for a driving test to earn your N or Novice License. With that you're free to drive on your own, but again only allowed one other passenger. Finally a year after that you go in for the Class-5 driving test for standard vehicles. Pass that and you're fully licensed and free to do whatever.

That being said I'm 36 and I do not have a license. At 16 in high school it seemed everyone else got on it right away. I didn't get around to it until I was 22, and it took me 3 tries to pass the written test. You have to get at least 43 out of 50 questions correct iirc. After that I drove once and our car was a pos. In the two years that my L was valid I never got around to driving again and when it expired I thought I just had to pay a fee and renew it, but no I had to take the written test again. I wasn't prepared for that and haven't attempted again in all this time.

My sister (who has had her N for like 16 years) always complains why I don't get my license. Well even if I got the L again I still need to practice driving and the only fully licensed person around is our mother who does the driving anyway. So sure I could take all that time and money that could be better spent on bills and food and try again but then I'm still stuck needing to practice for a year and tbh I don't like being behind the wheel that much.

lol you do not need a year of practice, at least in California. The written test had the same standards iirc but but the DMV has (had?) practice tests that literally repeat the questions.

The driving itself will get super easy pretty quick. I say just go for it. Don't be like me and have to take an uber everywhere.

The government? Idk

Back in 2013 I had a brain tumor removed, benign thankfully. As a result though I now have to take seizure medication. Here at least you cant drive for six momths Id you have one.

More importantly, the spot the tumor was at affected my vision. Its basically a half moon on both eyes and no doctor will sign off on it because Im a liability.

I've heard if you take a driving course here and pass you can reduce the wait time to 6 months, but those cost hundreds of $ to take.

Also our written tests are always different. Some have the same questions but they get shuffled around. I recall on my first test I got one particular question wrong, and then on the third test I saw the same question, Knew the answer from my previous corrected test and put that down. I got it wrong again. I swear it was the same question with the same diagram and everything yet I got it wrong twice.

I was 18, but that's only because I kept putting it off. I didn't fail the test or anything. I learned the basics of driving on my dad's golf cart when I was like 12.
