Video games are not sports.

You can legitimize video games as a competition without trying to make it a sport.

If you've ever followed League of Legends e-sports scene, you should know they follow literally every single pattern a standard sport does, and it's more about the players and their ability to mesh as a team more than the game itself. The game is merely a medium, and the e-sports is the act of watching the players perform through that medium. It is undeniably a sport

You call it e-sport not to trigger the less informed and ignorant, and whoever puts way too much weight into the "physical" aspect of sports, even tho their favorite sport is probably far less complex than lol e-sports

I also dont like the term esports.

It sounds like some people are desperate for validation, so they latch on to what mainstream audiences already find acceptable and even praiseworthy.

Except for failing the basic concept of a sport
Sport: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Spicy take. I doubt the people making bank off of esports care about mainstream validation.

the line keeps getting pushed. soon they'll want to be called athletes and use excuses like "well, it's an e-sport, so technically we're a type of athlete."

This is sort of a thing already. Not for "validation", but because it's a lot easier then creating a whole new category for countries to process your passport or visa, when you want to go to EVO Japan or whatever.

Yeah I don't get why people get so buttlacerated over what is and isn't a sport lol.

If I say ping pong or synchronized swimming or whatever isn't a sport, I mean, it's not a dis. I'm just saying it qualifies as some other kind of competitive game.

No.

Youre only considering whats happening now. I remember competing in Quake 2 tournaments in the late 90s and people were arguing back and forth about esports. A lot of the competitive community, which grew tremendously with the first StarCraft, Dota, and Counter-Strike, did not like being looked at as nerds (Aka those fucking nerds) and kept talking about our video game competitions as one day rivaling events like the Super Bowl or Olympics. They wanted legitimacy. But not all of us cared enough to get that validation, mainly because video games were our thing, not the mainstreams. Now? Of course everyone and their grandmother plays video games of some type, so IMO there is even less of a reason to cling to the esports label.

Chess is definitely not a sport.

Of all the things that are not sports, only cats and bookshelves are more not sports than chess.
