The U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants the maker of Purell to clean up its act, warning Gojo Industries to stop claiming that some of its hand sanitizers can help guard against Ebola, norovirus, the flu and other maladies. The Ohio manufacturer makes unfounded marketing claims about its popular line of alcohol-based gels, foams and sprays on its corporate website and on social media, the FDA's director of compliance said in a January 17 letter to Gojo. The agency's directive comes as the U.S. contends with an early start to the flu season and amid global concerns about the coronavirus outbreak that has killed more than 100 people in China. Gojo's marketing implies that some of its products can be used to prevent disease, which implies they are drugs even though they are not classified as such, the FDA said.

Hand sanitizer isn't for washing your hands... You're supposed to use soap and water and wash for 20 seconds

With 'hot' water to open the pores. Air drying is also better than a potentially dirty towel.

People also don't seem to know what mucus membranes are. Saw a thread (and a 'news' report) expressing surprise that you can catch viruses through your eyes.

Eyes, nose, ears, mouth, genitals, anus are all mucus membranes.

Right there in the article:

"Hand sanitizers, at least alcohol-based like Purell, are very effective in killing viruses and bacteria that may be on your hands," said David Dowdy, an associate professor of infectious disease and epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health.
But sanitizers "kill what's on your hands at the time that you use them, not for hours later," Dowdy told CBS MoneyWatch. "Just using an alcohol wipe from time to time is not going to protect you all day, nor is it reasonable to think people are going to use one every five to 10 minutes."

Handwashing, at the very least, rinses dirt and poop away afterwords, instead of just mixing it with ethanol and glycerin and letting it dry again.

To keep it 100 I didn't read the article fully. But it does sound like while purell is not a complete measure-- it does help.

People legit poop, wipe, get poopnon hands, and don't even use sanitzer let alone was with water, aka don't care.

My hands are sanitized but they may still carry the flu.

It never was. That's why in medical you're supposed to use the sanitizer dispensers after making contact with anything even gloves. Sterilization and cleaning are crucial in the fast environment where you may not find a bathroom sink all the time.

My care nurses must think this as we are required to sanitize our hands before we leave but not required to wash. Its specifically to help during flu season.

I wash my hands regardless though.

also uncircumcised penises have a greater risk compared to circumcised penis because mucous membrane thickens when the foreskin is cut
