Basically, if you dont know what that means, it means that Blizzard gets to say that THEY made it not you and they wont have to give you credit for it.

I'm not very surprised that the new stuff didn't live up the hype, but it's really disappointing how many issues and downgrades reforged has introduced into the original version of the game. If you don't have reforged the game will still automatically update to the new version when you launch the program and introduce a host of issues. Friends lists were wiped, custom campaigns are gone and the classic graphics don't have shadows anymore. The client also fully installs the reforged content even for players who don't own it, which means your game from 2002 is now a 20 gig installation.

When a new game comes out in a terrible state it's a problem, but one that can be pretty easily avoided by simply not buying it. Taking a game people bought 15+ years ago and messing it up is a whole new level of stupid, particularly now that digital distribution is such a big part of the industry and relies on consumers being confident that these intangible products they're buying are going to stay functional. Personally I know I'll be thinking twice before buying another Blizzard game after this debacle.

Overwatch was my favourite game in years and I played it for basically two years nonstop, but I'm seriously considering never buying another Blizzard product again. They're just complete shit from the top down.

I actually saw some people defending that rule (on a YouTube video) because "the tools and assets belong to Blizzard." Real Blizzard fanatics out there. I'm glad Icefrog took Dota to Valve.

I don't really care about this DoTA argument personally. So the one or two custom maps out of thousands that came out of the old WC3 and became their own properies wouldn't have done so with the new thing. I don't care about that.

The rest of the arguments are much more reasonable and Blizzard really shouldn't have done a whole bunch of things. But everyone always likes to stress "they made it so DotA cannot happen again!!1!" despite that really NOT being any level of a problem at all.

...you know, unless you are actually someone who would want to TRY and make the "next DotA" or something (hint: yeah right).

It's very unlikely that any of us will be personally affected by it, but that doesn't mean anyone should be okay with Blizzard taking complete, pre-emptive credit for somebody else's work. That's exceedingly scummy. The actual result is going to be that nobody is going to put any level of effort into making a decent custom game, which is a real shame because custom games have been a very enjoyable part of many of Blizzard's RTS games. Is it likely to squash the creation of a new DotA? Not really. DotA itself was a massive fluke; spawning an entire subgenre like that is probably not going to happen again, let alone within the same game engine. But it is absolutely going to reduce people's ability to have fun with the game, which is the complete opposite of what remakes are supposed to do.

AutoChess was born last year from the Dota 2 custom maps. It was the top streamed game on Twitch for 4 or 5 months. People literally downloaded Dota 2 (which thankfully is free to play) just so they could play AutoChess. Valve and Riot jumped on that immediately (and now there's an AutoChess, Dota Underlords, and Team Fight Tactics).

I wouldn't downplay the significance of dota and the new custom game restrictions it brought on. In addition to ensuring that nobody will bother trying to make something high quality or innovative in wc3 again the new rules also mean cracking down on custom games that contain copyrighted content. Tons of popular custom games used skins and names from popular franchises like pokemon and dbz, all of those maps are now at risk of getting removed from the platform without warning.

The best custom map I've seen so far is a plain one where the grass/terrain spells out "FREE HONG KONG" on the minimap.

Though I guess all they'd do is take down the offending content, rather than having to face lawsuits for it. Still, it could generate quite a bit of negative press for Blizzard if "their" custom games had chronic problems with offensive content. It'll also force them to moderate the library, which will cost money.

So thanks to a post on a certain subreddit I can't share here, I'm now downloading the classic installers from the official site since direct links still work. I have my keys from the battlenet site, but they are just a string of 26 characters without the - formatting in there. What is the cd key layout for WC3?

Never mind, Google eventually showed me a generated key with 6-4-6-4-6 as the formatting, problem solved.

You can still download the public test realm version from official sources, which is the final version (1.31) before the reforged changes. That allows you to play single player stuff without these new issues.

Pretty sure they lost the code for their other remakes, too. Brood War certainly, WoW Classic there were similar rumors (though I dont recall whether they were confirmed).

But that won't happen.

I had been tentatively interested in Diablo 4, intending to give it enough time after release to prove that it wasn't completely controlled by somebody who thinks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game_monetization counts as a porn site, but this has pretty much killed that. If I can't trust that they're not going to ruin the things I bought from them, I'm not going to buy things from them, and they've destroyed that trust with this decision.
