Getting $1240 back. I was expecting more :(

Weirdly enough it didn't ask me about my medical information now that I think about it. Hmm...

I love living in the future. A decade or so ago, I'd have to sit at a place for an hour to have someone filling out forms. The past several years I've done my taxes in 15 minutes from my phone. The past two years all I had to do was snap a picture of my W-2s and tap "yes" to a dozen or so questions and both my state and federal returns were accepted in an hour or two from the time I'd filed.

Makes me wonder how many people lie about it. I have health insurance and the forms, but it's usually been just a yes or no question without needing any more proof.

Do you care if you miss money? If I did it your way, I'd miss out on getting my union dues and other work expenses back.

Canadian taxes are done a bit later, but I'm expecting around $4500, mostly due to a provincial credit I got for staying in the province after graduating - $20,000 credit split across 7 years.

A lot of ppl lie for sure.

And some states no longer require ppl to have medical insurance. Apparently it stopped last year here in Cali.

A very situational question, but none of that applies to me so there's nothing I'm going to miss on a simple 1040ez filing.

Paying $360. So I'll put off filing until April 15. Maybe I'll think of more allowable deductions before then.

And here I am about 9 days after filing, and my federal refund has already been deposited. The state one always takes forever, bit it's much smaller anyway.

Yup. I love living in the future.

I'd say it depends on said individuals. I am single and have no property, student loans, children, etc. so there's next to nothing that I can claim extra deductions on. My mother encouraged me to have my tax done by a professional but I feel that will just be a waste of $30-50 for no extra refund. Sometimes I do think about doing it once via a professional in case there is something I missed but I keep finding myself just doing my own taxes via the Free File services.

I'd suggest maybe paying someone one year then. It may pay off from that point forward.
I can guarantee I would personally miss out on like $90 of itemizing. At this point, I keep receipts on all big expenses and whatever may be itemized like medical and state payments.
I own nothing but a car, and I think even on that I can write off any state tax towards emission or what have you.

I keep telling myself that but then I also keep saying, "I'll do that next year". Maybe I'll finally get it done once via a professional if I find a good recommended CPA or whatnot.
