But he also didn't have to make them aggressively straight and out to be man-dogs trying to lick Rey's butthole the whole film when that was fairly well avoided in both the previous entries.

It was like the idea that there was room for the "they gay?" question was appalling to Disney and they wanted the official canon to be a hard no.

I understand what you mean but you have to look deeper than that to really see what Abrams and the corporate suits were doing these past 6 years. For every subtle instance of a gay or even a possible interracial romantic connection, it had to be dialed back dramatically with a "NOPE NOT GONNA HAPPEN" scene halt. They spearheaded and teased this "Disney Star Wars is so progressive" narrative down the media pipelines so they could draw in those demographics at the box office but then not really emphasize it in the films until the literal very end when in the most cringelike fashion they shoehorned a 1 second, profile-view gay kiss between a background no-name character and another nobody just so they can wave their rainbow Mickey Mouse flags saying "told ya we would!".

The whole trilogy was a fucking waste in general but the romance themes were handled pretty horribly, especially when you realize they pandered to fucking "Reylo" psychopaths because well, it was easy (white chick + white dude).

I don't know, since I tend to stay away from those shows. There's a lot of them coming to Netflix lately it seems.
