So yeah, the biggest loser here are the Iowa State Democratic Party, the DNC, and caucuses in general, because this was such a total dumpster fire it's been 24 hours and we have 62% of the data and it's all been handled with with very little in the way of transparency or communication, and the backstory paints a picture of corruption and incompetence.
The (theoretical) knock on Joe Biden is that his support is soft and that appears to have been the case here: he kind of has to hope that the rest of the data isn't good news for Klob, or he could easily be looking at a 5th place finish. Sad! In any case, bad night for him, he's not sunk yet, but he's taking on some water.

As for winners, you have Mayor Pete and Bernie. One of them will be the winner when all is said in done, or maybe they both will. Neither got the clear victory they were hoping for, but they both beat Warren and Biden turned out to be 50% hot gas, which is what they both wanted.

Warren didn't get the come-from-behind win she wanted and it appears her campaign may be having some money trouble, but neither did she get clowned, so she should still have a shot at New Hampshire and/or Nevada. Klob is exactly where she was before the caucus, which is to say she'll drop out after Super Tuesday at the latest.

Bloomberg needs to be dealt with quickly, he is just about as big a threat to democracy as Trump
Honestly, I'd keep him along for the ride. People say he is here to prevent a left-leaning candidate, but all he would be doing right now is hurting Biden, right?

If Warren drops, that would only be better for Bernie hopefully.

This is why I don't necessarily think people should make a fuss about him being in the debates. Many voters have only been exposed to pro-Bloomberg ads and nothing else regarding him.

the rule change to get into the debates was requested by other campaigns in addition to Bloomberg's, which bears this out

Can we just not have our political parties be corporations that contract out shitty apps designed by firms of people failing upward. Also where the candidate outperforming expectations had his campaign donate tons of money to said firm and has connections within it. Why are we getting partial results spread out over days?

It feels like the US would use this as an excuse for a regime change war if another country was having elections like this.

yeah. except this is actual fraudulent election practice. historically the U.S. has claimed the excuse over elections where impartial/international observers deemed them free and fair.

Haven't dug into the data real well, but it looks not great for Bernie. Des Moines was an area where he had a huge lead, but now its a tie. Obviously there are still precincts to report, so who knows, but its not great news from that one county at least.

https://www.politifact.com/article/2020/feb/04/what-we-know-about-shadow-acronym-and-iowa-caucuse/

Buttigiegs campaign paid Shadow $42,500 for "software rights and subscriptions." They had no role in the app used by the Iowa Democratic Party.

How is Pete Buttigieg involved?
Even though caucus results were delayed, Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg was triumphant, tweeting early in the morning on Feb. 4 that he was heading "to New Hampshire victorious." Later that day, during an interview with MSNBC, he seemed to temper that announcement, saying that the campaign was reviewing internal numbers and began to realize "something extraordinary had happened."

On social media, some users started to speculate that what they interpreted as a victory announcement was a sign of corruption. Conspiracy theories began to spread that the election had been rigged in Buttigiegs favor because of his connection to Shadow.

Some claims, such as that the Iowa caucus app was funded by Buttigieg, mischaracterize what we know.
Buttigiegs campaign, Pete for America, Inc., paid Shadow $42,500 for "software rights and subscriptions."
Sean Savett, a spokesman for the campaign, told PolitiFact that they contracted with Shadow for text messaging services to help them contact voters.

It was "totally unrelated" to the app Shadow built for the caucuses, he said; Buttigiegs campaign wasnt involved in the apps development

The New York Times reported that the Iowa Democratic Party was secretive about using the app, and that it asked that Shadows name be withheld from the public. "According to a person familiar with the app, its creators had repeatedly questioned the need to keep it secret, especially from the Iowa precincts where it would be used."

Its founder, McGowan, has voiced support for Buttigieg, tweeting "Mayor Pete is running" with heart-eye emojis in January 2019.

Bernie's future lies in how well he does over the next set of states.

Honestly at this point one could be forgiven for just completely throwing Iowa's results out. Way too muddied. Even if it resolves into surface level mud, this level of muddied results just makes the whole thing unpalatable

Iowa has 41 delegates in a race where you need 1,990; all signs suggest Sanders/Buttigieg will end up separated by one at the most. Its real value is and has been in its ability as the first state to set up media narratives for the race to come (which in turn impacts the donations campaigns need to carry on). That was already going to be dampened by the fact that the State of the Union and impeachment are also this week, but this drawn out process further weakens its importance. To the extent any of this matters, I'd guess it's a lucky break for Biden to have his defeat overshadowed by the party's incompetence.

Nate Bronze had a good point on his podcast

We think that with this garbage there'll be changes to this process

But if the Democrats win in November, and in 2024 the Democratic incumbent is running again and is still popular in the party, then there's not gonna be much attention on the primary.

Then that means the next time the party will need to actually focus on this shit is in 2028. Do we think anyone will still care by then?

I'm not convinced any one will care whether a Democrat wins or not. And I suspect the people who care and want it changed will be less influential than the people who really care about it not changing
