He is just missing. Maybe it was a fox or a coyote. Or maybe my neighbors German Shepard. I didn't find a body or anything.

Searched my whole property carefully, not a sign of anything suspicious.

Could a fox or coyote eat a duck and leave no trace?

Yes. Especially a fox. They do cover their tracks to stop other predators from finding them.

Most likely if there's no trace your duck got eaten by another bird like an eagle or something.

I thought about a bird as well, we done have a lot of bald eagles in my area, but I feel like they eat mostly fish. I also don't think an osprey would eat a duck either and redtailed hawk is probably not big enough.

The ducks stay pretty close to the house, so I usually don't see predators close to where they are. I have never seen a coyote that close and only have seen a few foxes. Could have been a raccoon, but that wouldn't have been a clean kill. My bet is a fox, but I still feel like I would have seen a pile of feathers at least.

Could have been a raccoon,
That is extremely unlikely. Raccoons would more likely steal your ducks eggs and run the hell away than they would pick a fight with a duck that they might actually lose.

Eagles eat a lot of fish but they'll actually eat anything that they can grab. The primary predator of birds are other birds.

I feel your pain TC. Sometimes you won't find a body. We used to raise ducks and had our fair share of raccoon and coyote attacks. I can still recall one morning getting up and seeing a group of turkey vultures eating one of them in the driveway. Of the three we considered pets one was eaten and we found various feathers and part of his bill. The second died of a heart attack or something, and the third vanished without a trace.

Yeah, we lost all our ducks but one like this over the years.

The final drake got so big nothing could take him and he could survive Minnesota winters sleeping in a snow bank.

He became Super Duck.

The worst was our last hen though, she had been keeping a nest for weeks and we were going to have our first ducklings. Then she disappeared, I broke open one of her eggs and it had to have been days away from hatching. She built her nest up against the house where she felt safest instead of down by the pond edge were she could escape into the water.

It's kinda weird, you can get surprisingly attached to ducks, or at least I could.

Not like those damn chickens.

The thing I am most sad is I only have one duck now so he is going to be lonely. A lot of places only sell you like six ducklings minimum. Hopefully I can find someone that will sell me just one duckling so I can give my duck a friend again.
