It bugs me when a market treats the people who buy their products like an afterthought.

By saying Google and Amazon are their competition, MS is effectively saying people who buy gaming hardware because they want a local, offline gaming experience dont matter anymore, no matter how many people buy their stuff for that reason.

The console wars have largely died down. Nintendo hasn't tried to actively compete with Sony or Microsoft in over a decade. Microsoft has straight up stopped trying to compete with PC and effectively no longer has exclusives. Sony has been rolling with business as usual.

Part of me really wonders how much Microsoft cares about Xbox as a hardware. Like when you are a company as big as they are, selling Xboxes has just got to be so immaterial to your overall operations.

That isn't what they said at all. Nintendo and Sony aren't able to invest as much as Microsoft have into infrastructures that support cloud gaming. Sony is even partnering up with Microsoft for PlayStation Now. There are rumors that Microsoft want to stream games to Nintendo Switch too.

Google and Amazon are Microsoft's biggest competition because they can both do what Microsoft are working towards and there's nothing they do that compliment Microsoft's priorities. Microsoft's ideal goal is to have everyone be a potential Xbox customer. Not just people who buy hardware. Not just people who stream. Everyone.

The hardware and offline side is a completely different discussion. There is competition in that space but all three companies are succeeding together fine.

Hell the only reason Microsoft entered the console race to begin with was because they were worried that Sony would want to use PlayStation to make their own Windows competitor in the living room. Hardware sales are important but it has never been what makes Microsoft tick. Xbox has always benefited from Microsoft's bigger picture.

Ironically, Microsoft itself is proof of this. Think about how hard Nintendo, Sega, and Sony have had to work to build a base, and then Microsoft just rolled in with the Xbox. One generation later the 360 was a dominant, if not the dominant, console on the market.

Sony sure as shit has. Took them 5 years to implement downloading PS4 games for PS Now and the only reason they did it is because GamePass launched with it as a feature.

Let's also not forget Sony being forced into allowing crossplay on some games and fucking Xbox Live showing up out of nowhere on the Switch.

Sony are also starting to publish games on PC.

All three companies are closer than people probably think. For the most part they all benefit when the others are succeeding. But they also don't want anyone else joining the party.

It's true in a lot of ways.

Phil Spencer has made it clear that he is not focused on just selling the most consoles anymore. Nintendo is just kinda doing their own crazy shit, and Sony has announced one of their big exclusives (Horizon) is gonna come to PC now.

Console exclusives are becoming a thing of the past, which is a great thing imo
