Say theyre trying to put together the first community of people to colonize Mars. You get to go for free, and NASA/SpaceX trains you to be able to handle the flight/low gravity/space.

BUT. You wont be returning to Earth ever again. Agreeing to colonize Mars means youll be dying on that planet.

Would you do it?

If we assume all the best factors, that we'd be sent knowing the soil composition, weather patterns, and with all the resources to manipulate the stuff into something livable, that's basically just going off to be a farmer, but without youtube.

Regardless of any sentimental attachment one would have for Earth, what does Mars have going for it?

Will they continuously send down resources or is it just a limited amount that gets sent with you and then youre expected to die after doing some building &/or research?

Because if its a death sentence then Id go crazy and sabotage s*** as soon as any of the food/water/oxygen runs out.

Assume the kinks would be worked out where youll always have water and some source of food. It wont be good food, but you wont die from starvation or lack of water.

Sure, it'd be worth it to see the inevitable explosions everywhere on Earth while my family and I are watching the last firework display on the Earth, chilling on Mars in our spacesuits.

Doubtful. If I'm creating a new legacy of mankind, I'd most likely be expected to raise kids. That's a deal breaker.

Just like the Apollo missions did until 1973. Not really worth sacrificing yourself for the sake of mankind's destiny when destiny is liable to budget cuts.
