Some DVDs played unskippable trailers before taking you to the menu. Should be against the law.

None of the blu rays I own have an absurd amount of unskippable trailers/ads. They're either entirely skippable or it just starts the movie right away. What kinda blu rays yall buying

yeah. Every time I have to pop in an old DVD i remember how shitty that medium was. All my blu-rays start immediately at the movie menu. So just another instance of AVGN being a dumb dumb.

Most Blurays are treated with about as much respect nowadays as Wii shovelware, therefore he's right about most things. They're more often just DVDs upscaled poorly to 1080p without actually touching the transfer to make it appear better because studios want to make quick money out of it.

I actually just finished watching the video. A lot of these are similar to the DVDs are bullshit video so some complaints I'm not surprised to see. Was surprised to see him upgrade to a PS3 remote from the Dualshock 3.

I import a lot of Japanese Blu-rays and they don't have ads at all.

This is some lazy material he came up with.

1. Menus
People used to complain about how DVD menus were annoying in that they showed spoilers or had volume that would just blast your eardrums. Some BDs still have that. Some DVDs switched over to what BDs have. This is a silly complaint considering his other complaints are about how he doesn't have time to grab the movie, but instead would simply stream it.

2. Bonus features
Maybe with mainstream material, but the type of films he's interested in, this is false more than times than not. Vinegar Syndrome, Scream Factor, Arrow Video, Mondo Macabre, Synapse Films, Blue Underground and so on make their living by offering as much in the way of special features as possible on their releases. Most of the genre titles are receiving new releases with more extras than ever before.

3. Oversized cases
.....huh? Sure, there are going to be outliers like Criterion's Godzilla set but those existed during the days of DVD. Standard BDs are smaller than standard DVDs. Again, a stupid argument to make.

4. Discholders
I'm sorry James has the inability to remove a disc from a hub or that the hub may break. Why he would think this is a BD-only issue is beyond me. Heck, why is this even an issue? Oh, guess we gotta make it a top 10 rather than top 9 somehow.

5. Buttons
He's complaining about the remote? I mean, how does this make BD "suck"? They're no different than other remotes. Granted, it takes eye hand coordination to use it, but so does everything else in life.

6. Software Updates
This one I'll give him although I never have to worry about it. I don't use a PS3 nor do I connect my BD player to the internet although the amount of updates is exaggerated. But hey, if he's got time for elaborate menus, why not give time to get those updates.

7. It's owned by Sony
This reeks of bitterness at the fact that some of his profits from his BD sales have to go to Sony. His logic is that Sony owns BD so less movies get released on the format. I'm sure it's affected the release of something, somewhere, at some time but it's a necessary cost that every label has factored into. Much of why something doesn't get a release is because the market is different these days compared to the glory times of DVD. Also, he undermines his point soon after because not everything made the leap from VHS to DVD, a format nobody owned.

8. The name
You gotta get it to 10 things somehow.

9. Bookmarking
This is really a factor into why BD sucks? Maybe you can only watch a movie in 10 minute increments or something so you need this feature. Some discs have this while some players will remember where you left off so this is not totally true that this option has vanished.

10. Commercials
Some have them. Some can be skipped over just like DVD. Big whoop. He talks about how streaming is better, but depending on if it's paid for you could end up with commercials that occur during the feature which is worse. Of course, some streaming sites do not have interruptions but some BDs don't either.

I usually dig Jame's insights into movies, but this is a completely lazy list that screams "I gotta keep making content" with little thought put into it. By the time he hits the halfway point, he's reaching. Heck, he's reaching from the get-go.

I never had a problem with those unskippable ads on DVD and Bluray. You hit stop and go to the main menu... Simple.

I had the opportunity to 'meet' him and Mike in a chat once (they verified it was them by posting a comment on someone's YT using the JamesNintendoNerd channel. This was the old YT, so you're not going to find it now). They were very smug. Mike was particularly rude to me, James was just arrogant.

I mean I agree with some of what he's saying, but these are issues that were prevalent on a lot of DVDs as well.

Blu-ray is an arguably superior physical format to all consumer physical media before it though.
