Been working afternoons all my life (currently 1pm - 11:30pm). I'm usually up until 4am or and wake up around 11am

Due to staffing needs I'll be switching to 8pm - 630 am in March and just trying to figure out what times I should be sleeping, how to handle what times to eat meals, etc.

I have a friend who works a midnight shift at a hospital, and he says he prefers to sleep through the morning and wake up around 1 or 2 so he can things in prime hours with his friends, but he doesn't start work until 10:00. That's a really rough shift time.

Yea that sounds pretty miserable. Not only is it a night shift, it's also a long night shift. Like if you sleep 7-3 (8 hours) your time to do stuff is like 330-730 which sucks

Sleep when you get off. Eat normally when you do.

You will get used to it no problem. It is swing shifts that are the real bitch.

When I did night shift, I almost always went to sleep immediately after I got home. I might stay up a bit if I didn't have to work the next night, but even then, not for very long.

Would say his current schedual is way worse seeing as he is only has time from to do stuff from like 12am to 3am.

I've worked the night shift for 5 years now and really it's all about keeping a consistent sleep schedual that doesn't fuck your day up. Like for you while i don't know how long your drive is, sleeping from something like 8-4 or so every day so you can do things in the afternoon before work is good. For meals, you'd be looking at a small breakfast when you get home if needed, a dinner type meal before work and just eating lunch while at work (depending on what your cooking facilities are at work, if you can reliably make a not garbage dinner at work i'd obviously do that instead.)

The worst part was actually getting used to sleeping at those hours, a good sleep mask that has pockets for your eyes is just about needed along with dealing with the more noise going on outside is key to not waking up every hour or so. It will be rough adjusting to the change no matter what though and expect a shitty 1-2 weeks while you change over to the new schedule.

3rd shift is literally the worst. Even if you try to make your body adjust to it, it never fully works (not least of which because when you have to re-adjust to regular hours on your day off).

Buy a sleep mask and make sure to minimize EVERY source of light in your room, including stuff like the small lights from computer equipment, and alarm clock displays.

I've covered the shift before when midnight people needed to take vacation time and it's been fine I'm just more worried about doing it for an extended period of time

I never adjusted to normal hours during off days I just maintained sleeping during the day on my off days

I'm shocked any gamer nerd could hate swing shift. You get to sleep in, work late, stay up late, and you get the most free time.
