Which BOF game is your favorite?

I'm about to play BOF 3 again for the first time in about 15 years, but it'll be my... 4th playthru? It is my first play of the PSP version (downloaded on the Vita).

Breath of Fire 3 is my favorite in the series. The story is awesome, the "twist" in the story is great, it has enough mystery in its world building where they give you enough answers to satiate while still leaving mysteries that leave you wondering every time you play. The transformations are great, each character is worthwhile, and gets their just due in terms of narrative. Also, the little winks to the two previous games are awesome.

I have not played any. I've been meaning to for like a decade, but JRPGs are hard to find time for.

I understand that for sure. They are worth the time, especially Breath of Fire 2-4, IMO.

3 or 4. Lean toward 3 for having the best dragon system and master system.

But 4 had the best villain.
2 had the best Nina.
3 had Rei and Garr.

Ah, for some reason I thought there was a PSP port. I guess GBA and SNES are my only options.

Hmm... are the GBA ports alright?

From what I understand the GBA ports are good, yeah.

Looks like the only issues that exist is that the GBA couldn't produce as good audio as the SNES could.

BoF3 was awesome, I'd love to play that again. Wasn't a huge fan of the first, it was too basic even decades ago when I played it, and that kept me from even trying 2. I only played 3 because of a friend battering me over the head with it until I relented and played it (thankfully). Dragon Quarter sounds really fun, shame I missed it.

I love Breath of Fire 2 because it hit at exactly the right time in my childhood. I love how colourful the world was, I love the music, I love the battle system, and I love the characters. The game was my first real dose of political machinations and megalithic entities masquerading as a benevolent force. The translation is rough - really damn rough. Still, I will happily go back and play that game before any of the other ones.

My favourite part about Tapeta's story is he's only really useful for getting around the world map. Once you have Grandpa the whale, you can safely stash him. He is useless. Even Spar is far more useful than he is.

I don't feel right voting since I only played 2 and 3, but didn't stop due to lagging quality, just started getting too busy to play all JRPGs that were coming out. Kind of makes me sad too because I got BoF 4 for Christmas. Was the western angle good?

So what turned you off from DQ? I noticed you said it didn't feel like a BoF game... If that's the case which BoF game would you recommend to me? I want to see what I missed out on.

Dragon Quarter kinda moved away from what traditionally made a game a DQ title.

  • The integration of dragons as a whole was not great.
  • The story does not take place in a traditional fantasy world
  • The mechanics of the game itself were a little weird. It was designed to.. restart I guess is the right way to say it? Every time you use a "strong mechanic" it increases a meter that when you use it enough, the game has to be restarted, saving your growth. It's interesting, but was not for me.
  • There was a weird mechanic again of setting traps before the battle started, and the game expects you to do that as you move forward. I remember it being something that I never really grasped properly.
  • I honestly was not gripped by the story. Perhaps that is my fault for expecting a traditional BOF story, but I just didn't care for it enough to keep going.

In terms of what I feel would be a great place to start? BOF 2, as there are elements in 3 that are a wink to what happens in 2, 2 is relatively easy to play since it is on the Switch for the Switch Online service. 1 is too old fashioned even when it was released, but 2 has aged pretty well.

I never beat 2 as a child. Think the farthest I got was Fog Valley. I was only allowed video games on weekends, 1 & 2 have a reputation for being grind-heavy, and at least TWICE something would jostle the Snes, korrupting the data and forcing me to start over.

for me it was a good game but outside the save limit imo the gameplay was fun but it just isn't for everyone i enjoyed it for the challenge it gave me though and the replay value to understand the lore of the world yet i understand why fans hated it but it just get's too much hate people should give it a another shot
the story is good though to me BOF ranking goes like this 4>2>3>5>1
bof 2 is horrible to replay these day's due to the fetch quest galore man i can't believe i played it to the end without breaking the game

4 closely followed by 3.
5 is decent, but too different. gotta appreciate their effort to innovate the gameplay tho.
didn't finish 2, frustated with encounter rate.

Her accuracy is trash. My preferred party members was Garr, Nina, and Rei. Momo would have been fine if they had kept it at 4 party members instead of lowering it to 3.
