...as a game adaptation movie goes.

Of course that doesn't mean it's going to be a good movie. Illumination is behind it so...could go either way. I don't think I've liked any of their stuff yet they also seem to have the right vibe to do a Mario movie justice (their soft-skin CGI character models work well for that sort of animation style that a Mario movie should demand).

No movie is guaranteed that. What it does have is what has to be one of the best marketing teams behind Illumination. Check out the budget to box office for their movies. Cheap stuff that makes bongo bucks.

The Mario movie has no chance of being of good quality, but it will be a great success. Is that a win for someone like me who loves Mario? Absolutely not.

That already happened and it fell through hard.

Mario is THE video game character. So long as you don't use Bob Hoskins as the face of that and know what you're marketing to, it's a slam dunk.

Let's face it, he's the icon, but the brand isn't as strong as it used to be. His games don't cause cultural waves, smb2 sellouts, isn't prevalent in media like he used to be. Actually if you check the franchise, it's basically made all it's money in gaming. It maybe shows people aren't as interested in him outside of gaming.

Pokemon is much bigger outside of gaming and that didn't make 100m opening weekend and I thought it could be a billion dollar film.

Merch. Unlike other successful franchises to the level of Mario, he doesn't sell nearly as much merch in proportion. I blame Nintendo. Mario should be the biggest franchise in the world, but their hesitation to place him outside of gaming heavily until recently has hurt it. He should have been in constant TV shows, to remind the audience of him. People really underestimate the power of TV for Pokemon's success. It was the world's greatest commercial.

Don't get me wrong. It is impressive. As I said, Mario is THE video-game character. Look at many of these other franchises, without merch and a variety of other markets, they would be lost. Mario basically single-handedly got on the top ten through video-games alone. That is crazy indeed.

Which is why I am saying he should be the biggest franchise in the world. He should have crazy merch/toy/other sales that other big franchises have. Nintendo hasn't used Super Mario to the best of his abilities. You can disagree with the point that he'd be the biggest if you want, but I do believe we should see that he could have been so much more.

I think this movie will be popular but moreso because of the studio making it than the IP itself. Illumination know how to market hits and Mario is an easy one to take advantage of.
