Did people really dislike this game back in the day?

Some people still dislike it. They've got bad opinions though.

Its kinda like the mario 2 of the 3d Mario's. Its different so people think its weird

I only ever rented it but I wish they'd remaster or rerelease it already. I loved the atmosphere.

I never owned it. A friend lent it to me and I hated it at first but once I got used to the controls I loved it. It was my favorite GameCube game, and I got pretty close to 100% on it.

It's a pretty nice game and definitely worth playing, even if it has several glaring flaws to it.

It's got the best atmosphere of any 3D Mario game. I love how every level feels connected and there's an overarching island theme to it. Really does stand out from the basic, grass, desert, ice, water, food themes.

People were thinking of another revolutionary game for Mario after 64, not a tweaked 64 with the fludd gimmick. One of 64s draws was how many moves Mario had and the ability to do anything. Sunshine had less moves....oh and the end boss was among the worst ever done.

Camera and controls suck just enough that any kind of precision-based shines are a fucking chore to acquire.

Yoshi, the special stages, etc. All really suck

I didn't like the Blue coin stuff at all, it was done poorly. That was the worse part of the game. I loved the shines where you loose the water pack. It also had really good boss battles.

Went for 100% of the game to see the other ending, it was more annoying than hard, especially that pachinko machine shit.

That's a horrible take.

The 10th hardest Star in Mario 64 would still be harder than anything Sunshine can dish out, unless these people are mistaking tedium for difficulty.

I mean, the pachinko stage and that one with the hazardous water with red coins that you had to collect on a slowly disintegrating leaf as your only safe spot and if you failed you had to spend five fucking minutes simply getting back to it could easily leave a very bad taste in your mouth.

Not me, I love it, but there is no excusing those.

I like how the toxic water doesn't even look toxic. And if you jump too high the leaf will sink far enough to get you killed

You can cheese the toxic water stage by just walking along the rims of the waterway and hovering between them to get the red coins.

Absolutely loved it when I was a kid. Didn't beat it till a couple years ago, though. Its flaws definitely became apparent by that point, but it was still a lot of fun.

It's no Galaxy or Odyssey, though.

First game I ever bought with my own money. I would buy it now because another 5 or so years of no ports will drive the price to $100+

I paid $45 CIB last Summer

I love it, but there's a gamefaqs user review that helped me understand people who don't like it.
