The only one I can think of for where you are in the story is when you enter the fight in the Coliseum, you'll get an advance payment for your services. Go and deposit it at the bank immediately, or else you'll lose it via story reasons. Also, after the fight, you'll be prompted with a story event. Press up on the controller and hold it there until the scene is done. You'll understand what I mean when you get there.

There's a giant side quest throughout the game where you're able to upgrade your hideout. It will be awesome and I don't want to spoil it. I'd recommend using a spoiler free guide.

In the Colliseum City, spend all your money. Then when Rand the horse-man asks for all your money, say yes. It's the 2nd city in the game, that's how you'll know when it is.

Other than that...just enjoy the encounter rate. It's fucking insane in that game.

You guys are talking about shit that's well into the game. Basically, to get the best ending in the game, you need to flag 2 events and have 2 special people join you. One of the two is hidden behind a bookshelf in Gantz (Guntz? Can't remember), and the other is part of one of the last storyline events in the game. You need to rescue him.

You also need to not recruit some people because only one person can occupy a given position and if you recruit the wrong person you can't recruit the right person later.

Get cure 2 by leaving at least one villager in the well. Renew (a revive spell) is the reward you get for saving them all and is much less useful in this game, especially with how the shaman fusions work. You lose fusion at critical or death and is much preferable to have the healing spell.

Oh, don't sleep on Spar when you get him. He has one of the earliest shamanized forms in the game, and it's kind of potent. Spar arrives at a time when you're kind of lacking for suitable healers, so his support and healing is nice this time.

On that note, don't leave characters too far behind in levels, as the game is bad about forecasting when you need party members for specific parts of the game. You'll need Spar and Sten in your party around the mid part of the game, so don't leave them underleveled. You'll also need Rand in your party towards the late game, but this shouldn't be an issue, as he's one of the more popular party members.

My final party usually consists of Ryu, Shamanized Nina, Shamanized Katt, and Bleu.

On that note, the retranslation patch uses the original Japanese names, but we're all using their Western release ones.

Ryu = hero
Bow = Boche
Katt = Rinpoo
Tapeta = Jean
Aspar = Spar

The rest ought to be the same.

They DID build on it further - the American translation is just so bad that you miss out entire plot points and story because it is broken and incomprehensible from start to end.

No, seriously - Breath of Fire 2 for SNES is perhaps the worst translation I've ever played in my 31 years of living.

the original translation would tack like 5 words per text-box, so small conversations would take about 10 text boxes. And the english was all awful and made no sense.

It was bad

speaking of BoF 1, I thought it was mediocre as hell. Obviously in respects to the time it was released, it was probably fresh, but having played it like a year or two ago, I consider it basically Generic RPG, The Game

Generic RPG, The Game

Overall, yeah. But the vignettes that you traveled through had some high points. It's one of the few RPGs where your party has one legit human and everyone else is a different sort of animal-human.

There's MC changes with both Nina and Gobi for brief spells.

Battle system is pretty basic, Karn is there to just consume most of your party, healing abilities getting priority in battle and items being spammable AF turn most fights into a joke.

I put it on the same tier as Lufia 1 or Paladins Quest :\

You're definitely not wrong on this. There weren't too many RPGs of its calibre back then, so it was a relative breath of fresh air. It gets to be a bit of a slog towards the mid-to-late game.

Even in the context of 1992, there was nothing special about Breath of Fire. It was the first game I played that featured a full cast of anthropomorphic people, but that's it. I still loved it.

Uh, in the context of 1992 the only other good SNES rpgs were FF2, secret of mana, and link to the past...and breath of fire was a good choice after you beat those 3.

Just to give you an idea - some of the ugliest and shittiest looking SNES games came out AFTER Breath of Fire. 7th Saga looks like a release SNES title and plays like shit, and yet came out in 1993.

Again, there were 3 other options on the SNES at the time.

Lufia 1 also looked like shit and was so bad that your dudes attacked the same enemy spot even if you killed them beforehand - like Final Fantasy 1 on NES.

Only 2 games I know of that were that garbage...and 1 of them had an excuse as an NES title when RPG video games was not a thing.

EDIT: Lufia came out in 1993 after BoF was my point...kinda forgot to make it.

Yes. Cure 2 is a better reward than Renew.

All right, you're going to get to the next phase in the story soon. I believe the re-translation handles this better, but when Ray asks you to take him someplace, he means back to The Hideout.

You're going to meet a new character soon. Don't do what he says immediately. Instead, go to the other side of the waterfall on the other side of the landmass, and enter the cave. The Wildcat Restaurant is here, and you want to do exactly everything they say. When they ask how you want your meat cooked, pick rare.

After you're done, you'll fight a boss. After beating him, you'll talk to him in the next room. Forgive him, and he'll teach you a new spell, which costs 0AP to use. A lot of people give this attack to Nina, because it's a non elemental attack, and stronger than her regular attacks.

Once you've done what the character requested, you'll be able to use his abilities for a little while. Don't go to Simafort just yet. Instead, go to the lake on top of the plateau beside the witches tower, and try to go down the waterfall. You'll get a new slate of abilities for Ryu.

One more thing. Once you're done in the Witch's Tower, climb back up from the left side of the first floor, as opposed to the right. You'll find your second shaman here.
