i couldn't stop smiling, the entire time, ok?

ffvii is a seminal game for me, and i know it's the same for a ton of others as well. i admit, nostalgia was a strong factor. however, i'll also admit that i did try replaying the original earlier last month, and i had to stop because of how dated it is and how awful it looks, ok?

what did you think of it?

i can respect this, i was going to do something similar, but i couldn't stop playing once i started.

was surprised how long it lasted, tbh. i figured for sure, they would have ended it just before the guard scorpion fight, but they kept in that boss fight, and the whole escape sequence, ok?

Gameplay is passable, music disappointing, voice acting was good, already like Jessie more from the demo than her entire piece in the original, game looks good, and while the ending "twist" itself doesnt do much for me i do like the implication that someone might actually play a part this time around.

To be fair, that's exactly what they did with the original FF7 demo back-in-the-day. I remembered playing the hell out of that demo, and running around the starting area, just to explore what I could.

So, they stayed pretty much true-to-form. Enough to build hype, but not enough to cheapen the full experience.

Ive seen so many people complaining that this first installment only gets you through Midgar (aka Disc 1 of the original release). Have people forgotten just how much raw content is in the original game? To exhaustively recreate ALL of that content at this level of quality would take more than a terabyte of PS4 space, easily. Battles aside, its reasonable to expect that much of the roaming / puzzles would be drastically toned down (e.g. the train yard in the slums). Can we not appreciate the fact that theyre actually finally pursuing this project at all? The barrage of people who were expecting a full-quality remake of every facet of the PS1 version for $60 are out-of-their-minds.

more like around 130gb but ok

ff15 actually looks far better, and is smaller in file size.

also, people tend to misremember how long the original game is. it's about 20-25 hours long. midgar can be beat in about 3 hours, and that's the part everyone says lasts the longest.

in fact, the game fits on a single disc. seriously. the entire game, all locations, cutscenes, dialogue, everything, is on one disc. the only reason there was 3 discs is because of the fmvs. the original ps1 game, minus fmvs, was about 460mb.

probably not, actually.

it's just what happens when you compare an open world with a linear path. you have to render a large area, versus a very small contained one.

take any footage of ff15 at endgame, where it is a linear path, and it looks, at minimum, the same. it'll probably look better.

ff15 is even running on a engine that, graphically, is superior to unreal 4, which is what ff7r is running on. it just so happens that ff15 is the only game square made on their own in-house engine, for some stupid reason.

Disk 1 of FFVII ends with the The Forgotten Capital. Which is a hell of a lot more than just Midgar.
Last time I played FFVII was a few years ago and I put 50 hours into the save and was at the beginning of the endgame.

Agreed. The scale of the original game is massive. When you think through the lushly detailed still environments (e.g. the Pagoda / the city of the ancients / etc.), there are so many insane details that they'd have to be fully modeling in 3d (textures and all) if they're going to maintain the level of detail shown in the demo.

FFXV was pretty, yes, but not at the same content scale of the PS1 games in sheer quantity of environment types.
My first playthrough of FF7 was very lengthy, but that's because I was exploring every back-door secret I could find (Golden Saucer arena / chocobo racing / chocobo breeding / vincent's hidden storylines / zack's hidden storylines / etc.). My shortest playthrough was about 40-45 hours.

All that content really adds up.

Have they revealed what the "overworld" exploration will be like in future installments (like, after we leave Midgar)? I'm curious how "detailed" and explorable the world map will be.

Didn't the honey bee inn get censored in the original western release? I've been wondering how they'll handle the "sex appeal." In some ways, it's been toned down (like Tifa's character model. More realistic.) On the other hand, they seem to have upped the innuendo.

The combat is poorly conceived. It wants to be like a hack n slash but has clunky movement, a bad camera, ridiculous amount of numbers and bars cluttering the screen, and is constantly interrupted by the action menu.

Besides remake part 1 is already going to be on two discs so meh. It's also said to be 20-40 hours long. I expect around 30 hours like Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 although that remains to be seen.

The simple fact of the matter is Final Fantasy VII is still a thing so while Square are bringing it to the current era they also wanted a current era battle system. That's fine as far as I'm concerned. I'm not sure why you hate remakes that are optional for you to buy though.
