Love Is... is a comic strip created by New Zealand cartoonist Kim Casali (ne Grove) in the 1960s. The cartoons originated from a series of love notes that Grove drew for her future husband, Roberto Casali. They were published in booklets in the late 1960s before appearing in strip form in a newspaper in 1970, under the pen name "Kim". They were syndicated soon after and the strip is syndicated worldwide today by Tribune Content Agency. One of her most famous drawings, "Love Is...being able to say you are sorry", published on February 9, 1972, was marketed internationally for many years in print, on cards and on souvenirs. The beginning of the strip coincided closely with the 1970 film Love Story. The film's signature line is "Love means never having to say you're sorry." At the height of their popularity in the 1970s the cartoons were earning Casali 4-5 million annually.

TIL what I thought was a joke for ages was an actual real life thing. And from New Zealand of all places? Its been ongoing for almost 60 years. Wtf did anyone else know about this? Not sure if I can even link the Wikipedia page.

Just looked it up, it seems it's just a cartoon representation of a sweet thing.

How did TC only just find out about this? I remember the first time I saw that Simpsons episode, and knew exactly what it meant. I remember how the strip used to run in British newspapers. It probably still does.

As someone who read the comics every day when I was a kid, I remember this strip very well.

Why does it matter if they're naked?

Western Puritanical ideology has fucked up people's view of the natural human body that the mere idea of casual/carefree nudity is seen as wrong or sexual.

I knew it was real, the local afternoon newspaper ran it until they went out of business.

I agree with this logic, but not when applied to 8 year olds. Nobody should desire to see them naked.

Im actually most surprised by how long its been running. Its almost as old as Peanuts and still ongoing. But yeah I cant really see something like this flying in the mainstream nowadays. People have gotten a lot more sensitive to these types of things.

People who read the strip don't "desire to see them naked" anymore than Nirvana fans desire to see a naked baby in a pool.
