When it comes to anything humans do of note (art like movies, writing books, drawing/painting, singing; sports and such) I've heard some espouse the idea that there is no such thing as talent. I don't think this is true, however, as do most people I would imagine. I mean, it's hard to deny that two people of equal zeal may not see the same results, or people that have just up and decided they wanted to paint and were amazing from the start. I'm not saying those people don't work hard, far from it. But it certainly helps to be naturally inclined towards that which one is attempting to excel at.

I think people's brains are wired in different ways and that allows some people to (fully) grasp different concepts faster/easier and that comes across as natural talent.

This is a more scientific answer to what I believe talent actually is .

Certain people have a natural aptitude for certain tasks, but no amount of talent will compensate for a poor work ethic.

In competitive fields, you need to be hardworking and have the natural aptitude.

I don't understand how any even remotely logical person could not believe in innate ability. Some people will never have steady enough hands to drawn an unassisted straight line no matter how hard they try while others can dissect blood vessels, some people's inner ears are formed in ways that let them stroll across a slack line while other people's form the other way and they fall over if they stand on one foot for longer than it takes to put the other down. Some things simply are not a choice.

I think a talent is more just what you were born with, but it develops in part because of it. Some of it is nurture or learned through experience growing up.

What if you're the best in the world? Like, Kim Jung Gi works hard, worked hard to get where he's at, but he's clearly a cut above the rest of the pack and he says he's always had a naturally great memory.

Or if you're a physical freak you can sometimes make up for lack of skill, like Bob Sapp in his fight agains Ernesto Hoost.

I think those that say it doesn't exist were just trying to sell the "hard work gets you anywhere you want to be" line. I could have started working out and practicing from the time I was a child but I'm never going to be a defensive lineman. Just not built for it genetically.

No, some people are generally just "born that way", but they still have to do something with it.

Some people pick up skills more quickly than others but everyone can become good at anything with enough effort. True prodigies who master something at a young age exist though, so yeah, talent exists

You gonna volunteer to be the first patient for a surgeon with palsy because they've really put a lot of effort in?

Kind of this >_>

Like I said, I'm 5'9" and 175 lbs, have good genetics athletically, etc. I'm still not playing defensive line no matter how hard I try.

No. I wouldn't volunteer to be anyone's first patient lol. But if that person has been working for years and has an excellent track record, then I might let them operate on me even if they do have that disability. At that point they've already proved that they're capable of doing the job

Yeah, of course. Talent by itself won't get you far, though.

So now you're just going to pretend that it's possible for somebody with palsy to be a good surgeon? Do you even know what palsy is?

Hard work can make you better than someone with talent if that talented person doesnt put in the effort. Being talented isnt the be all end all, it just means you don't have to work as hard to be good at a thing as the average joe, but that doesnt mean that the average joe cant compete through practice and hard work

I know what it is. And people are capable of achieving a lot of crazy shit that shouldn't be possible.

So you completely deny that there are physical limitations that cannot be overcome with any amount of perseverance?
