NBA team owners are waiting to hear from the league office on the state of things financially and are bracing for dire news, as relayed by ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski. The league could lose nearly $500 million in ticket revenue alone if the season is canceled because of the COVID-19 outbreak, according to veteran reporter Tom Haberstroh of NBC Sports Philadelphia. "The NBA likely will provide projections on three primary scenarios: the financial costs of shutting down the season, restarting with no fans in the arena, or playing playoff games with fans," Wojnarowski wrote. "Those losses will be reflected in next season's salary cap and the players' share of basketball-related income."

Haberstroh reported that the league generally rakes in an average of $1.2 million per regular-season game and somewhere closer to $2 million per playoff game. With 259 regular-season games remaining and approximately 166 playoff games, that projects out to an estimated $466 million in revenue.

This is why I don't get those who are saying we people are overreacting. These sports leagues aren't going to forfeit this kind of money unless they think some shit is going down.

Of the many people and businesses affected, professional sports is near the bottom of the list. It sucks, but they make tons of money every year, they'll be fine.

The thing that is going under the radar is it effects the business next to the arenas. The restaurants and jersey sellers near the arenas are screwed if no sports is going on. This goes for hockey and baseball too.

I think they're only referring to ticket revenue. Merchandise, concessions, alcohol, and tv contracts aren't considered I believe.

There is a difference between overreacting and taking things seriously. They are taking this seriously to prevent the spread of a contagious disease, as we all should. That doesn't mean panic, overreact and hoard 500 bottles of hand sanitizer.

They're trying to find new ways of denying the Lakers like when they vetoed the CP3 trade. But all jokes asides, this really felt like it was our best shot at a title.
