3D audio finally being pointed to as a priority for games is actually pretty exciting. This stuff is also 15 years old and was largely kept down by really gross patent wars during its heyday, but there's some awesome potential here. As the opposite of a tech guy, all I got out of that is that the PS1-3 BC was probably false.

Even if it never had a true base in reality, that rumor was so prevelant and excepted that its undoubtedly going to cause a lot of dissatisfaction. It was the most talked about and hyped feature out of the PS5.

Sony themselves confirmed it was only PS4 like several months ago so I wasn't really expecting that any more.

Audio stuff was cool. SSD stuff was really cool.

Looks like a significantly less powerful machine than the Series X though, and not full backwards compatibility at launch though. Looks like it will come down to cost and software for Sony.

It's nothing major. You can run your PS4 games on the SSD that comes with the system (800gb). However PS5 games will only run on the SSD while PS4 stuff can run on either. So it's probably better to put PS4 stuff on a seperate HDD if you don't wanna keep deleting stuff.

Seeing a lot of people saying MS has won just because it's more powerful. Unless they also get all the Japanese devs on board (not happening) Sony and to a lesser extent Nintendo will always have the upper hand.

Still waiting on the "explain like I'm 5" definition of ps4 BC. I literally just boot up my ps4 and play. I dont have any extra hard drives or ssd's or whatever. Can someone explain please?

I mean yeah, it boils down to this. It's not the wierd early 360 days any more. There will be a lot of games I want to play on PS5 that won't be on Xbox.

The built-in SSD has limited space so people are saying you don't want to waste it on PS4 games, which are designed with the expectation of loading off a hard disk like the PS4 had. You aren't required to get internal or external drives of any type for backwards compatibility, but you could get a hard disk for PS4 games and they'd run fine. PS5 games require running off an SSD.

PS4 games run faster on an SSD already if you install one in your PS4 now. They should still load faster on a PS5 I'd assume.

the majority of japanese games that won't launch on the next xbox are inconsequential. the total number of people who won't buy an xbox because it won't carry falcom or spike chunsoft games is essentially a rounding error. the playstation 5 will still outsell the xbox however because the xbox is only really a thing in the us and to a lesser extent the uk

I always feel this is massively exaggerated. The Xbox 360 probably outsold the PS3 worldwide (360 data is very outdated so not sure) and only about 60% of its sales came from North America and the UK. Even when you factor in the rest of the anglosphere the 360 did very well in Europe. It is entirely possible that the Xbox outsells the PS5 on the strength of NA+Europe+Developing markets.

Yea cause people are stupid. You only have to think for yourself a little to realize that BC for all those consoles was not gonna happem. Fun fact the PS2 emulation on PS4 isn't even good. It has a bunch of bugs which depending on the game means developers have to alter the game to make it acceptable for sale. Which is most likely the reason why they're only selling like 15 PS2 games on PS4

Eh, that's just the PS2 version. It barely worked on PS2 either.

PS3 BC would have been nice, but these days I play all my PS2 games on PC.

And 800GB really doesn't sound like a lot, given that we've already got 100GB games on PS4. Add another gen of bloat, and that's going to hold, what... two AAA titles if you're lucky?

I'm really hoping that 800GB doesn't include the space for the OS. If it does, that's pretty damn limited.

One thing to note regarding storage space is that they're emphasizing dling games in parts. So with a lot of games (assumably) you'll be able to download the single player and multiplayer modes separately, or delete the single player mode after you're finished with it and still playing online. That'll save a good chunk of space on some games.

I said before 1TB should be the absolute minimum at this point. That 800GB won't be free space either.
