It makes sense for the rebels to call it that, but you'd think the empire would at least try and be a bit more euphemistic, like the Planetary Battle Station 01 or something

Calling it the Death Star is basically saying "Yes, we're totally evil and have no compunction about blasting entire worlds to dust. Why do you ask?"

The empire in the first movie was not meant to be some sort of morally gray semi evil entity. George Lucas wrote a very simple good vs evil space Western and it's probably not worth anyone's time to try and dig deeper into decisions like that.

Have you seen the guy who was the Emperor's enforcer? They weren't putting up a benevolent front. The entire point of the Empire was to make everyone in the galaxy terrified of them.

The entire point of the Death Star was to keep everyone in line through fear.

They even make a point of saying the Imperial Senate had been disolved and that local governors would run everything and theyd keep the people in line through fear IIRC.

yes, my point exactly

wouldn't it be more effective to at least try to pretend you have the galaxy's best interests in mind?
building a "Death Star" and blowing up planets is MORE likely to inspire a rebellion, not repress it

It's an extreme authoritarian system. The idea is to keep people in line through fear, not respect or a veneer of benevolence. The Empire is so huge and the Sith are so sure of their power that they're not worried about a rebellion. It would be, and was, a speck in comparison.

Before Death Star:
Mr. Governor, Mr. Governor, it seems like we got a group of rebels on the planet, trying to recruit people and equipments!
Hmmm, pretend that we dont know about them, capture them if they are doing it in public.
After Death Star:
Mr. Governor, Mr. Governor, a rumor says that we got a group of rebels on the planet, trying to recruit people and equipments!
WHY ARE YOU STANDING THERE, USE EVERY MANPOWER TO KILL OR CAPTURE THEM, THE EMPEROR WILL BLOW UP THIS PLANET IF HIS SPIES HEAR THIS RUMOR!!!
