If I were prone to conspiratorial twists, here's what I would conjure up in an agitated street sermon: Big Oil and Big Pharma developed, released or hyped up this to get people to stay at home, man, offsetting gasoline use during the Russia/Saudi price war. As the environment improves, that will also give them more time to drill for oil without running the planet into ashes. Ashes! What Oil loses in gasoline sales, though, and listen good, it more than makes up for in plasticware for carry-out and and one-use plastic goods for medical things and the wrappers for things that are going to be double-wrapped now and so.much.plastic! When reclamation of all the plastics in the landfills is made feasible, Oil is going to want to get their hands on it and praise themselves for finding a new, non-renewable energy source. Lots of places in the present world burn plastic trash, which is just fuckin' wild, man. What's Pharma get out of this, though, I can hear you asking. Pharma and Healthcare need a big PR win. Whether They engineered it or are just hyping up a particularly virulent flu season, they get to remind everyone who has insurance how much they're watching over them. Pharma may now seamlessly justify its "we needs profits" stance for raising the prices of everything despite no change in formulas.
