That is fucking stupid. Unless he is some known troll trying to fuck with people you have to let these discussions happen. What if he really is at the end of his rope? What if telling us is his first step to getting better? There were a lot of people giving him good advice and he seemed to be listening. Suicide is a touchy subject but you can't just push it aside if there is a serious cry for help.

I don't think they really need to let these discussions happen here. If he is at the end of his rope he's too vulnerable to rely on this community.

You'll inevitably get that ONE prick who says "you're worthless, do it" and then GameFAQs has to answer to understandably upset loved ones. That actually makes sense, it would be very helpful if someone made an official CE emotional support thread and outline the rules of participation so that we can all keep an eye on each other and no one does anything they might later regret.

If we lived in a more reasonable world, the trolls who encourage suicide would be the only ones open to being sued.

But we live in this world so instead the site only covers it's own ass.

It's a shame. At least people were talking to him. This could have been the only place for him to let out.

Maybe those professionals that people keep saying to go to arent always the best interest especially with the Coronavirus, you gotta isolate yourself in these times to not spread the infection.

Talking to people on the same level could sometimes be an antidote if their energy is actually positive without self gain.

It would've been nice to moderate the posts that were negative encouragement and not ban the individual who was thinking of taking their life.

I posted a topic about a tweet made by a rapper saying they were going to commit suicide at the end of the year and numerous people were saying s*** like "why wait? just do it now"

Is that rapper a user here on CE?
Probably not, which is why no ****s are given.

The topic isn't the only way to communicate with users on this site. The longer it's up and the more posts it gets the more likely one asshole finds a target. All it takes is one guy.

Users on this site have ruined proposals, keep pictures of users to make fun of their appearance, remember vulnerable, personal details of people to bring up to them in other topics, etc. It doesn't begin and end in a topic.

It's to lock down the account so an admin can get in touch and give him available resources to help him. Deleting the topic does nothing, because he hasn't actually broken the terms of service. Likewise, a suspension isn't inherently a result of a terms of service violation either. yes, the vast majority of them are the result of, but they aren't the only reason we suspend accounts. If we have to limit your access to the website for any particular reason, we need to do it. This also includes compromised accounts.

what if someone on a suicide hotline was really half assing their job and did the opposite of helping

"but it only takes one asshole!" is a really terrible excuse to prevent good people from reaching out to someone who needs help tbqh

Our options are extremely limited, because we can either act like benevolent users, or act like moderators. It opens up for the user a lot more once we are done with it on our end.

Moderating those posts wouldn't automatically fix the problem. Cause the person would still have seen them, and now they're stuck in their head in their most vulnerable state

The reality is is that while it's good for people to offer support and help, nobody here is a trained professional

I'd like to think that suicide hotlines have measures to avoid people half assing it. There is no way to control that here.

I think it's an awful thing to have a policy that is actively opposed to good samaritans, which puts people in a worse position and discourages people from helping with the threat they could be moderated as well. But it's good to see a mod responding here and that the approach they take is not a total cutoff.

In or out of the discussion, though, this is why it's important not to intentionally spread disinformation like that phony topic about Vatican City, it doesn't help with the panic problem. Think before posting false things that could unnecessarily frighten people.
