Wow thats.. something. I feel like the topic title is a little misleading though.

Im interested to hear more about this. Like maybe NBC was pissed that Steve said that and thats what made them decide not to renew his contract.

Such a shame though. Personally I thought the show was still great after he left (I never saw it as The Steve Carell Show and always loved the entire ensemble) but a lot of people couldnt get over him being gone. I bet the show wouldve lasted a few more seasons had this not happened.

Vice bombed. It got oscar recognition but I dont think it broke even. The big short made a profit but was not a huge hit. Foxcatcher made less money than its budget and Ive never even heard of it before now. Despicable me 1 came out in 2010 and 2 came out in 2013, which is not the last 5-6 years. So Despicable Me 3 is his only hit in the time frame I mentioned

The best thing about being a main character in a billion dollar franchise is that you can choose whatever projects you actually want to do because you aren't hurting for money.

Also this was around the same time as the Conan/Leno fiasco. So.....their previous regime fucked over Conan and the replacement regime fucked over Carell.

I mean... I guess I understand what you mean, but being in those box office bombs was still probably at least as lucrative as TV, and the few big hits definitely mean it "worked out" imo

It makes sense because his departure always felt rushed (especially not even ending on a season finale)

Its a shame because his leaving really did hurt the show (even though I still loved it)

Bizzare decision on NBCs part

Steve Carell as a leading man comedian is pretty awful. Look at all his awful movies like Evan Almighty, That awful magician one whose only highlight was Jim Carrey in supporting role, the cheeseball spy movie one, ect ect

He's best in supporting roles, and more serious movies

Yeah but he got in during the mid-oughties comedy revival so he still made money on them mostly

Yeah I agree but that spy movie made like $250 million/3x it's budget so he probably made more from that than he did from the office, that's all I'm saying

I actually looked into it a bit and just based on reporting it kinda looks like he made more from a season of the office than he would per movie at that time ($7.8m vs $5m) though that might also explain why they were ready to let him go. Apparently a second get smart was never made because of him wanting more money, too lol

This does sound a little bit one sided. Did Steve Carell wanted more money or less filming dates to do more movies and NBC rejected his offer? Only NBC and Carell knows that answer.

well yeah at that point in time he was a hot commodity so he def cashed in. problem is he picked so many duds that bricked that he no longer has that power to just pick any script. But he's better off in dramas and indies anyway

I, too, still enjoyed The Office after his departure, even if it had some terrible stuff at times. Like Will Ferrell's entire storyline basically sucked ass, unfortunately.

I actually liked Get Smart, and yeah he's been good in the dramas he's been in since the show ended.
