Thinking about finally playing Demon's Souls to pass the time during the quarantine period. I've played Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, and Bloodborne, for reference.

Anything I should know to avoid screwing myself? I've heard this game is linear, and I don't care all that much about missables. I usually like pretty generic weapons (Claymore in DS1, Mace/Long Sword [I think it was lightning] in DS2, Hunter Axe/LHB/late game Whirligig in BB), so lmk if there are some early game weapons I should be looking out for.

Useless stats? Are upgrade materials rare? Or should I feel comfortable trying and upgrading different stuff as I go along? Decent early game armors to carry to late game? Any weird systems like Adaptability? Those kinds of things.

You can go back to areas after you complete them. I definitely wouldnt describe it as linear. There's a hub world and then portals to other levels.

If you're just looking to finish the game, then you'd have to outright try to screw up your build. Most stats make sense and it tells you what they all do.

People beat the game at level 1 and no equipment. I wouldnt be too concerned about needing to optimize anything unless you're planning to get into the pvp

I'm not worried about optimization per se, but I find I enjoy these kinds of games more if I make most of these decisions as early on as possible.

You can fairly easily start pumping points into other stats if you find yourself not liking how certain builds play. I ran a very jack of all trades character on my first run to try everything out.

Anyway, I found the info I needed on the Demon's Souls board from 2009 stickies lol. The most important information was to get the Cling Ring, and that the game is not designed to do all of one world, then all of the next. And (generally) don't worry about the luck stat. And there's a spear in 1-2 and a falchion in 4-1 that's good for noobs if they're looking for a beginner weapon.

I'll look up where to farm grasses and whatnot as I need them.

make sure to get the Cling Ring.

when you're in your soul form, your life bar is reduced by half, and the Cling Ring makes it a bit bigger than that.

and if you die while having your body, it makes the world that you're in more difficult. if you keep dying in body form, it gives the world a "black tendency", where there are black phantoms, and they're more difficult versions of enemies that you face.

so if you don't want to go through all of that during a first playthrough, just kill yourself in the Nexus and play in soul form for each world you play through.

but black world tendency can also be good in some places, like you sometimes face black phantom versions of NPCs, and if you beat them, you can get their weapons/armor, iirc.

and certain shortcuts can be open if you have a "white world tendency", and you can get that by beating bosses.

there's also a "black character tendency", and you get that by killing non-hostile NPCs, but I think that only really matters if you want to do a certain quest.
