Isn't the rate of infection starting to drop in NYC? I read that somewhere and can't remember where so it could be wrong. But it sounds like you can control this without a total shutdown, you just need people to comply. From the pictures I've seen on my cousins facebook page, it sounds like people in the city are taking this more serious. If they stay inside and keep their distance then you don't really need to lock it down like Italy. Shutting it down now would be kind of pointless, the horse has already left the barn. I worry about New Yorkers leaving the city and bringing it to where ever they go, but sadly we are well beyond that. Every state has it, there is no stopping that now regardless of a mass quarantine.

I think the TC is talking about a literal military barricade. People living in New York have been sheltered in place for weeks, so the only possible thing they could be talking about is physically preventing people from leaving Manhattan. Which would induce mass riots and probably kill more people than the virus.

If Martial Law happens because of this, expect so many riots and ugliness. People WILL die from that certainly.

It already spread to the surrounding areas, the only difference is New York is testing like a motherfucker so it shows. There is no containment now, we've been past that point for probably 6 weeks. Quarantining the entire city would just be a publicity move now.

social distancing is demonstrably effective. the countries that are doing the best are using a combination of that plus rigorous testing.

south korea, vietnam, cuba, and china have all been dealing with the virus very well.

and the virus is highly contagious and killing many people. so your second question is basically "is it worth saving thousands of lives if the economy suffers?"

if your answer to that question is anything but a strong "yes", then you are a sociopath.

(not to mention that thousands of people dying all over the world like this will also have a large effect on the economy)

Except those countries that you mentioned aren't using only social distancing to fight the spread of the virus. Those countries have done a hell of a better job than the US at providing testing and face masks for their citizens. In fact, those countries have implemented even stronger measures that have nothing to do with social distancing and aimlessly closing down businesses. China has not hesitated to track and isolate potentially infectious people in a way that would never occur in the US. And that's not even accounting for the political and cultural differences between the US and the countries that you mentioned. Americans aren't exactly known for deferring to authority and doing things for the common good.

As for the rest of your post, you need to do your homework on the data. Not everyone is being affected by the virus in the same way thanks for a variety of factors related to lifestyle and health. And yes, I don't want to see people die, but do you really want to be in an atmosphere with an economy in the tank and civil unrest that could cause even more social problems (including further death)? That could be a reality with the way the US and many other countries are handling this.
