Do you think Trump botched this crisis?

For 3 days since President Trump has changed his tune on the "liberal media hoax" and "sensationalization" of COVID-19, he has talked about a close friend who has been sick from COVID-19 and is in a coma..

Vanity Fair revealed that identity to be 78 y/o Stan Chera, a fellow New Yorker real estate moguel as the Jewish Telegraphic Agency said he was a member of the Syrian-Jewish Community in Brooklyn and owns Crown Acquisitions with his sons and has done work with Jared Kushner

He brought up the Chera hospitalization though didn't use his name when talking to reproters after then decided to extend federal social distancing guidelines to combat the virus through the end of April

He said "I had a friend who went to a hospital the other day. He's a little older and he's heavy, but he's a tough person. And he went to the hospital and a day later, he's in a coma, i call, How's he doing? Sir, he's in a coma, he's unconscious. He's not doing well"

He brought up Chera again and suggested other friends were sick too and said "You know, how did that happen so quick?"

He maintained his friend being sick was NOT the turning point on his thinking on the virus and said "I've never seen anything like it" after their botched response to the crisis as a Trump Official admits Trump took a GAMBLE on the virus and did not act immediately as he hoped it would disappear by Spring.

Bill White, a Trump donor said he was shaken by what happened to Chera and said he is one of his best friends.

Trump's tune has changed and said the speed and viciousness of the virus is horrible, really horrible and remarked growing up in Queens and now there's full of body bags in hospitals in hallways and being taken to trailers as he's never in his life seen anything like it except on TV as he finally decided to act and not re-open America by Easter as he imagined.

Do you think Trump botched this crisis?

In no way did he botch anything. (I swear the haters get dumber by the day.) You think it would have been smarter to send the whole country into a panic before they knew more about it? Ya'll want him to fail and I'll spend days laughing when he wins anyway.

It's pretty shallow to keep making this political too.

Yes. Trump disbanded the NSC pandemic unit that Obama put in place to prepare for potential pandemics.

Back in February during one of his rallies, Trump said, Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. You know that, right? Coronavirus. They're politicizing it... They can't even count their votes in Iowa, can't even count... This is their new hoax." https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-calls-coronavirus-democrats-new-hoax-n1145721 (if you don't trust NBC, watch the video where you can hear it straight from his own mouth)

It's not shallow to recognize that he refused to act and many have died as a result because he was too busy trying to convince people that the Democrats were just making it up to make him look bad.

Look Im all in favor of giving people the benefit of the doubt, but didnt, like, he disband CDC workers or someone who could have worked on preventing this or something?

Again, thats assuming thats even true. But if it IS.. then, yeah, this is kind of on Trump.

This is a big job. Trump was able to offer assistance (money, national guard, whatever) but letting each state shoulder some of the workload was for the best.

I feel like the president has done mostly a good job. Closed borders to China relatively early on. I feel like he has taken the situation seriously and a lot of news organizations take half quotes out of context. Just my two cents.

This.

Also this CNN report is relevant.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/27/cnn10/ventilators-supply-government-warnings-coronavirus-invs/index.html
This would indicate that both the Bush and Obama administration were repeatedly warned about a shortage of ventilators and did absolutely nothing about it.

You can try and point fingers at any one official (Trump) all you want. But the bottom line here is that government in general failed us. And we should be weary of them attempting to use this to further expand their power. And shame on people shilling for it in the form of socialized healthcare.

So when the CDC decided to make their own test instead of using the WHO test and failed at it, causing months of delay in testing that we're still trying to catch up on, that wasn't his fault?

Or the fact that he won't utilize the Defense Production Act to distribute PPE and ventilators to states based on need instead of states having to outbid each other for supplies, leaving healthcare workers with massive shortages, that's not botching the response?

When he disbanded the pandemic response team even though Obama directly briefed him on its importance and how it would help with future pandemics, that's not his fault?

And that's not even mentioning how much he downplayed the virus when it first started spreading (e.g. saying it would go to zero cases soon or that it was just a mild flu).

He's one guy, what or how much do you expect him to do? That's why gov't has many departments. There are probably economic reasons to do things a certain way and we can't literally drop everything else or those who aren't sick are going to experience problems. After all once this blows through we gotta have something to go back to. Lastly I've said before that he downplayed it because he has to be the 'strong leader' instead of breaking down and causing panic.

The haters will hate no matter what he does. They failed on that whole impeachment thing so now they'll ride this for however long. Give up. It's a worldwide issue, not Trump, not political.

... He just listed four things Trump has either done or not done that he shouldn't/should have done, all of which are well within not only his capabilities, but his responsibilities as president. You literally quoted him listing things Trump could and should have done differently then immediately asked how much he expects Trump to do. This is why nobody takes you seriously.

You should read closer then. Don't be a dunce. He isn't a scientist or doctor. States are hoarding supplies. I explained the downplay. Now you look ridiculous and I had to be the one to point it out. Don't expect to live this down soon. You did this to yourself.

I expect him to do the bare minimum because hes the damn President, especially when he has direct control over the situation. State governors are calling on him to use the Defense Production Act to allocate supplies. He could literally right now start the process of redistributing supplies to states based on need but he isnt doing it, forcing states to outbid each other. This is directly putting healthcare workers and patients in danger.

Also theres a difference between putting people at ease and outright spreading misinformation. Telling people itll go to zero cases soon or that its just a mild flu are outright false, and he should be letting doctors and scientists speak instead of spreading misinformation and doing more harm than good. Thats inept leadership.

You should read closer then. Don't be a dunce. He isn't a scientist or doctor.

You don't need to be a scientist or doctor to know that the CDC didn't need to reinvent the wheel when the WHO had a test that had already been demonstrated to be functional.

You don't need to be a scientist or doctor to know that bidding wars for medical supplies are not an effective way to save lives.

You don't need to be a scientist or doctor to know that disbanding your pandemic response team puts you at risk of being very seriously hurt by a pandemic (which the doctors and scientists he's got advising him would have told him is always a possibility with how interconnected the world is these days).

You DO have to be a scientist or doctor to be able to say with any accuracy that COVID is no worse than the flu or that it'll drop to zero cases soon, meaning his insistence on doing so despite his lack of such qualifications (and flagrantly against the advice of those with such qualifications) was extremely reckless and irresponsible and even now is resulting in many Americans disregarding the distancing measures that are needed to keep the virus from devastating the country.

Every single one of those is a completely legitimate criticism of how Trump has handled the situation and an example of how he's made it worse than it needs to be. There's ample room to argue that any other president would have fallen similarly short (though probably not in exactly the same ways, since Trump's compulsive narcissism is fortunately relatively unique), since this is a very novel situation that no leaders really know how to handle properly, but you cannot say that Trump hasn't messed this up. That is objectively false, no matter how many times you want to say "I'm right and you're wrong this totally constitutes a rational argument."
